| Guadalupe permits... more info.. Tuesday from SAC
I sent an e-mail to Bob Fletcher of SAC... below is his response with some additional info on the Guadalupe Permits...
Tuesday, August 7, 2007
Jeff:
We had received an email from CONANP last Friday indicating that the 5 boats that already held a ‘Temporary Importation Permit’ from the Mexican IRS would be authorized to fish Guadalupe Island. With that information, we notified the 5 boats and began to get ‘Temporary Importation Permits’ for the other 22 boats that had requested Guadalupe permits.
Unfortunately, we received a follow-up email from CONANP, where they clarified that the authorization was to allow the boats to request the document from the Ensenada CONANP office. At the present time, no boat has a permit for Guadalupe, but we are working day and night to get the needed authorization, and we think we should have it in the next 2-3 days.
For your information, CONANP is an acronym that stands for the “National Commission on Natural Protected Areas”, and it is the responsible agency that administers all biosphere reserves in Mexico. This has been an incredibly frustrating four months plus for me and for all the boats, but hopefully it will come to an end soon. We cannot run roughshod over the various offices of CONANP without damaging relationships that we will need in the future, because in the last year the federal government has ‘decentralized’ the operations of several federal agencies, including CONANP, and those regional offices now have much more authority than in past years.
As you may or may not know, there will be a new biosphere reserve created next year, one that will directly affect all Sportfishing off Baja. It will be called the ‘Pacific Islands Biosphere Reserve’, and will include the islands of: The Coronados, Todos Santos, San Martin, Geronimo, Cedros, Benitas, and Alijos Rocks! Throughout the world, Reserves and the constant permit issues are here to stay, and the result will surely be more delays, more government and definitely more money! Welcome to the new Sportfishing reality.
By the way, the Rooster is one of the 22 without a temporary importation permit, and so we are delivering the needed paperwork tomorrow so that they will have that one by tomorrow afternoon, and hopefully all the boats will be authorized by Thursday or Friday at the latest! For you it will be a close call whether the boat has the authorization or not! Keep your fingers crossed!
Sincerely,
Bob Fletcher, President

So, are permits now required for all vessels wanting to fish at Guadalupe? We are planning a trip there soon and I wasn't aware of any recent changes...

What a bunch of hooooieeee! Oh yeah, there just aren't enough yellowtail at places like Cedros Benitos, etc., etc.. They really need protection. This is absolutely devastating news for the long range sportfishing community!! This is going to have a huge "trickle down effect" on the whole indusry! What a helpless feeling! WHAT CAN WE DO???

Mr. Fletcher you need to be a little bit more firm in our position, as your work shows in the results!
Remember how may years weve heard were making progress on the Rivas, Where are we with that issue!
As I said before, see the BS about the Sharks and Quanitys was not it either!
But we need to band together and stay away as a hole for a month and make it known we are not going to continue to support the entire country with our sport fishing money, and they need to become more reasonable! If not we can spend our money in other places and the Mexican people who are not the responcible partys will be the ones to pay!
That means no more fifteen dollar margies and nor more $50.00 tie up fees to clear ports and re fuel! Remember mexico says its there enviroment, if that were true than why are they raping the water with Long Liners and allowing the commercial guys to completly wrap the inside of mag bay and take all of everything that the nets would hold!
