| GUADALUPE ISLAND PERMITs-- MY OPINION
I have watched all these posts regarding fishing Guadalupe Island. You all have been going round and round the fishing permit talks but no one is looking at the monies that can be had for the Mexican Government by allowing people to "COME LOOK" at the Great White Sharks at Guadalupe. It has been known for several years, Shark Diving trips to Guadalupe are "THE TICKET" for non fishing ocean going persons that want the thrill of seeing the great white up close and personal. These people pay premium prices PLUS fuel Surcharge PLUS Mexican visitor passes, PLUS Island permits of up to $15.00 per day PER PERSON. They also need chum, and if they can't fish for it they will buy it, but not from our local fishing boats, but Mexican fishing boats based at Guadalupe. If you think about it, it is a win/win for Mexico. By not allowing fishing from our fleet, there is no danger of the fishing boats attracting the sharks away from the divers. The sharks have been trained (ala Pavlov) to know lunch and dinner are on the menu when they feel the vibrations of a large boat, that is why we have paid the taxman much more during our fishing trips. Read the link and you will see how much money is gained from shark diving trips, and why there is NO QUESTION these boats can visit the island. Trips are already booked and the only question is (and this is in the printed ad) if they can also fish (they note this may change). http://www.greatwhiteadventures.com/schedule.html
Fishing permits are chump change compared to what is gained financially from the Dive Boats. When this destination popularity dies down, we will once again be given the go ahead to fish the island. We are the back up profit from all of this. |

Its been my understanding that the dive trips out of S.D. are a go, extra fees will be enforced.

You are correct and many trips are sold out. The "Premium" adventures head out of Ensenada. The San Diego based boat "Searcher" heads out of H and M for these trips.
Here is another tidbit from the Great White Adventure site, please note the updated info does refer to fishing with a "if permitted".
QUOTE]Fishing Options – Although diving with white sharks is tops in terms of excitement, we’re aware that some of our divers might also be interested in fishing options. The waters around Guadalupe Island represent some of the best sport fishing the Pacific has to offer. Record setting tuna have been caught in the waters immediately surrounding the island. Though not world record setters, many of our passengers have caught tuna weighing up to 70 lbs. The real challenge is getting the tuna on board before the sharks collect their “tax”. We’ve also discovered that hooking a tuna definitely has the capacity to amp up the shark action around the boat. As an extra courtesy to our angler-oriented divers, we have purchased permits from the Mexican government allowing those among our group with the desire to fish, the opportunity to do so. As fun as fishing for big tuna can be, from an environmental standpoint, we do request that our passengers not catch fish solely for the sake of just catching a fish. We practice a use what you catch policy. If you want to store the fish for future consumption, we can make that happen. If you want to share the culinary experience with your fellow passengers, our chefs can prepare a tasty sashimi platter or a fantastic, fresh as you can get tuna steak dinner. Yum![/quote]

I was looking into fishing the Andrea Lynn mothership the fall. The website says after September the boat heads to Guadalupe for diving until the following spring. The shark dive trips $2800.00!!! Fishing the Lynn $775.00 for 6 days!

I was just looking at the Islander's page on Shark Diving, too. Yikes, $2850 for a load of 16 on a fiver! Pretty amazing what John and Shane have put together with their boat. Kayak trips, dive trips, Fish and Surf trips, Shark Diving, and of course a few fishing trips, too. By the way, Searcher and Islander both run out of Fisherman's Landing Islander Charters : Great White Shark Cage Diving Home

standard rule of thumb when dealing with the mexican government:
expect everything to be behind schedule, and cost way more than agree'd upon.

Good on them they saw the light and were able to set up and book diving trips in advance.
I love fishing Guadalupe as much or more than everyone else. I do NOT think we are abusing the privelege or overtaking fish there. I DO believe it is much more income for Mexico to allow the shark "Viewing" trips. I want to go back to Guadalupe and fish again, so I am on the "wait and see" wagon too.

Thanks for the information, Rox. Good stuff and yes, it is somewhat of a privilege to fish down there. (Only been twice - biggest Yellowtail I've ever encountered).

You guys need to start feeding the sharks off of Catalina or some island closer to LA or San Diego. Those Mexican fish stealing bastards need some serious competition......and the Mexican sharks do too. |

When this economy cools..and it is....then there will be a LOT LESS people willing to fork out 3G's to see the "Whitey"....Its a long trip, can be very uncomfortable to those not familiar with it and lets not forget the airfare just to get to SD for your departure....Spendy it is !
This kind of ecotourism is not going to go away by any means, but it is going to slow wayyy down in the very near future. We'll get our Island back
