You can go with the Mustad 94150. Tie a uni or san diego jam and back the knot off giving you the same effect as the perfection knot.

Thanks as always for your great info. | I hate the Perfection loop. I feel you give up too much pound test using that knot. I tie the Jimmy Lew Loop knot. Stop by Yo's in Gardena sometime, ask Jimmy to teach you. Or go on a trip with me.

I enjoy reading the replys to these type of questions. I learn a lot.
Steve, Wahoodad, anybody else.....
Why do you prefer J hooks over circle? Is this based upon bad experiences with circle hooks, or just "never had a problem with J's why change?"
One reason I am more inclined to want to use circle hooks is the idea of less chance for line abrasion with lighter line. Is this a fallacy on my part?
Thanks,
Scrubs

Thanks,
Scrubs | like David said, don't swing on a J hook.
crank the handle to come tight and it'll set in the corner like a circle hook.. so far i've got the corner every time..
i think to get the corner you have to have good bait management when flylining.. feel your bait, when you get picked up you'll know and when you come tight you'll find the corner no probs..
my dad's always gut hooking his fish cause his tuna's swimming around for a bit and the bait is in the gut by the time he's setting the hook! ahahaha! so because of that, i make him fish a circle hook..
i like J hooks cause it's easier to hook a bait in the butt or shoulder.

Oh gosh you're so right Nelz. The first couple of times I got picked up at Alijos on our 7 day I acted like a newb with a rent rod. I watched the spool spinning and was slow to react. Pulled hooks were the results and I was 0 for 2. Quick reactions and setting the hook quickly will result in that corner of the jaw hookup more often. Can't remember the last time I felt I had to swing like Roland Martin to set a hook. Put it in gear and when it comes tight, game on.
I hate it when I forget how to fish and it takes a bite or two to get into it. Yellowtail are much more forgiving. I also hate it when the tuna is butt hooked from the inside!

Lots of us like j hooks because it is soooo much easier to hook your bait. I use J hooks 90% of the time....I like VMC's... light, strong and cheap.
For the smaller sizes I use the uni knot and just open the loop up...when I get bit the loop closes up....IMO ringed hooks just add weight. I sometimes do used ringed hooks in the larger sizes.

i was using the owner mutu ringed circle hooks on my last 5 day and had good luck until i had a 30lb. yellow spit it back at me after about 5 min. on him and him at color. the deckhand told me circles were the wrong type of hook for yellows, albies. and such. told me to use a "j" hook instead. went to my tackle box and pulled out some owner "offshore" hooks. did not lose another fish the rest of the trip

For a 2-DAY...HA...just get a 5 hook pack of OWNER RINGED MATU 3/0-4/0 Circle
Hooks..all you likely need. I'd get 1 pack of each size! THE RING not only makes your
BAIT more lively...in a longer fight...the RING does the see-saw in the hook eye...
not your line. It also keeps the line a little further away and out of the fish's teeth
and mouth if the circle hook properly sets. Bring a 25-30 & 40lb maybe for your 2-day
and about 10-12 hooks should do the job...RINGED CIRCLE HOOKS that is!
Most ALL of this was using Ringed Matu's with SARDINES or Live Squid.
Oh yeah..I'm right down the street from Owner and have NOT lost a Tuna
Yellowtail or Dorado..or any fish..since they came out and started using.
If you DON'T SWING and let the circle hook properly SET...it won't come out!
I've lost a LOT of fish on J Hooks over many years..but THEY TOO have their
place and time...like some days now...1/0-2/0's using Anchovies for bait..I would!
