What is the best way to splice a solid spectra top shot onto a hollow core backling?

Specifically, I am looking to place 100 yards of Japanese PE line on top of 80lb jerry brown hollow and would prefer to us a splice versus a knotted connection. Thanks in advance - TunaBully

I like the way that Basil at BHP Tackle does it. He splices a loop in the main line and then he makes a top shot with mono and hollow core and makes another loop in the hollow core that is on the top shot and he just does a loop to loop connection. It takes about 30 seconds to change top shots this way.

Re: What is the best way to splice a solid spectra top shot onto a hollow core backli

Mike Roni - Thanks for the response, but I am not looking to splice mono on top of the hollow core spectra, but to splice solid core spectra on top of hollow core. I am fairly certain that the chinese finger trap and serve used by Basil won't securely hold the solid core spectra in place. Anyone else with some recommendations? Or am I best off doing an offshore loop in the hollow and then connecting the two via a loop to loop, with the loop in the solid core created using a bimini?

Sorry for the confusion. Try shooting Basil an email, he might offer up a good suggestion.

I've seen people try it but have also seen many failures...

Bimini in the solid and a loop in the hollow for a loop-to-loop and only one knot. Best I can do.

If you have the Sato Crimp System, try doubling the solid and inserting it a couple of feet up inside the hollow. Then crimp it. I think you could do the same with a serve.

I did that to connect a hollow sleeve of 80 lb JB to some 80 lb Power Pro. No problems. This was on a Newell 533 - 5.5 that i used to toss surface plugs with a 50 lb topshot. No slippage. I used a crimp. Used the same connection to connect 80 lb solid to 130 lb hollow for an 80 lb topshot on my 6/0 and used it for a big yellow on the drooper loop. Again, no problem.

Tie an overhand knot in the hollow and leave it loose.

Work the knot 4 feet up the hollow and leave it loose.

Insert the the solid into the hollow about 4 feet.

Work the loose overhand knot all the way down to about 1/8' from the end of the hollow where the solid enters and cinch it down.

Simple and works great.

Yo Jess,

Here is a great web site showing a hollow to solid connection. I have been playing with this connection for several years now and have been very happy with the results. Gary Sato's system has proven to be a winner using crimps for a variety of hollow to mono/flouro connections however for this connection I am serving and glueing the area where the hollow meets the solid. I believe the crimp or serve connection will test out stronger than the knot though I have not come up with a method to verify my belief. To me it makes sense a straight in line connection will be stronger than one with a knot in it.
As always, the connection the fisherman can create efficiently and consistently without kinking or damaging the lines will be the best for that person.

Basil's web site for other connections is worth bookmarking as well. For some reason I cannot copy his website info but just google bhp tackle, go to his web site and after looking at all his goodies go to the connections section.

Enjoy

Jamie

Re: What is the best way to splice a solid spectra top shot onto a hollow core backli

Yes, what Jamie & Steve said. I think your best bet is to double up the solid spectra about 6'-8' and run it up through the hollow on your reel. Poke your threading tool out the side wall of the hollow spectra and pull the solid spectra loop exiting the hollow back into the center of the hollow. Now you have the solid main line and solid tag line exiting the beginning of your hollow spectra with doubled solid spectra spliced about 6'-0" or so up into your hollow. Here is the important part: Use a bow-string serving jig with 30# solid spectra to serve the connection where your solid spectra enters your hollow. By using a bow string serving jig, your serves will be nice; tight; & extremely even & uniform. Follow this with a bit of JB activator & adhesive and your are set.

sato crimp or save some money and work harder and serve it. Both methods are good.
