when do boats start checking out Guadalupe?

Being kind of new to long range and going on my first 5 day next Friday, I thought there was a possibility we would go to Guadalupe. Looking at last year's reports, most boats starting looking there in late June and early July. I haven't seen or heard of any boats doing any business at the lupe yet this year. Is it out of the question at this point? Or do any of you know if a boat will decide to check it out any day now. I am only curious because it seems that the style and tackle I would need for the Lupe is a little more unique than just a few days of Albie fishing with a stop at Cedros. I'm thinking I will probably need to book another trip in the fall if I'm going to finally get to fish there.

I've also heard you guys mention that you can call the captain and get his input, but I just can't see when they would get the time to shoot the shit with me about my upcoming trip. I just feel like I don't want to bother them? Is it really cool to do that? Thanks for helping a rook.

Last year was a beyond warm water year. It was hot, and the Albies came through in June and were gone early. It was also a great year at Lupe. Heck, we caught Yellowfin there on a 7 day in mid June. Now that was weird.

Every year is different. This year, there's decent sign of offshore tuna. I would look to spend several days offshore with a possible visit to Lupe or Cedros/Benitos for some yankin' and crankin' on Yellowtail. Ya just never know.

It's really cool to do that. Call the office, and if the captains can't return your call in a timely fashion, one of the crew should be able to do it. I've always had success talking to somebody whether if was Frank for a Shogun trip, or Sam or Brian for a trip on the Angler. Call them. You're their guest and they appreciate your business. What boat are you on?

Thanks for the reply Steve. I always get a lot out of your posts. I'm on the Excel. So I guess I just call the office and ask to speak to Justin, right? I assume he will be the captain even though the website still shows Shawn Steward. Justin has been running all the trips so far and I heard Shawn has moved back up to the Channel Islands. Is this right?

Yes, call the office for sure. I'm not sure who is second ticket on Excel. I believe the office lady is Betty. Justin is pretty busy, but somebody should be able to talk with you. Might just be the old gunfighter himself, Bill Poole.

And yes, Shawn is up north running out of Ventura or somewhere up there on the central coast. Looks like he's a local boy gone back to his roots. Smaller boat, shorter trips, home at night with the family.

Re: when do boats start checking out Guadalupe?

This is a more typical year, cooler water. I'd say late July to mid August. No worries.
