June 5dayer Shogun

Is a 80# rig really of any use on this trip?
I have them, just dont know if i should bring them.
Could spool up my hot rodded 30sw w/ 80 if it is suggested

got 30, 40 x2, 50 x2, 60

also have massive amounts of flouro
shit loads of swivels and tuna rings
plenty of hooks ranging from size 1 to size 4/0 gorrillas

anything else????

The trip is june 17-23. Any chance of Yellow Fin Tuna or too early?

It's doubtful you'll encounter any pelagics that require 80 lb, but it does happen. The most practical application for 80 lb would be dropper loop fishing or trolling, but you chould be able to troll with the boat rods and if you get to an island and want to fish the dropper loop, just cut off one of the jigs from a boat rod and use it. All you should have to do is let the crew know what you're doing and make sure it gets rigged up again for the next day. The guys on the crew will probably even rig it up for you.

Call the office and ask one of the captains to return your call. I called prior to my 1st 8 day back in '00 and the big guy just happened to be in the office at the time. I felt much more comfortable with my tackle preparation after speaking with Frank.

As far as the rigs you've got listed, I think you're nicely covered for a fiver.

With 2-50s#, I'd drop the 60# and go with the 80#. You probably wont be bait fishing with 60#. Dropper-loop at guadalupe (if that's the island you wind up at) is recommended at 80#. Trolling with less than 80# is frowned upon.

Think: Blue Fin Tuna, albies and island-sized Yellowtail

You're leaving a week after I get back from my 8-day. Hopefully, we'll find them and make it easier for your trip to get back on them.

You are good IMO. What do I know? I bring a hundred pound outfit, and have needed it 3 times on 5 dayers. Bring the 80 pound.

So now what are you giong to do? Not only should you bring the 80 lb outfit, but a 100 lb rig as well. Who knows what you're going to run into. I see we're getting into Bluefin. It sure would be nice to have an 80 or 100 lb rig all set up to go, nice and sano. Ready just in case the captain says, "Big fish here, use the heavy string.

I guess the old saying really rings true, here. You can't use it if you leave it in the garage.

The 80# rig will suffice. I'm saying I bring a hundred pound rig, just packed it today. 40# is what you will use most the time. I bring 3 40# rigs for bait alone.

It's supposed to be out on a 3 dayer. They have several 3 dayers on the early schedule.

I also think there is a Captain from another boat runnning it, might be the Royal Star, I am not sure on this, one of the new guys from the Excel was talking about it. Mr. Poole is also said to be on the boat.

They left the same day the Shogun left, but earlier in the morning,
maybe about 11 or so. The American Angler got out earlier in the day too-
So they were fishing different areas.
Shogun made a move and then that is when they saw the BlueFin

We will see what happens today.

Good luck to everyone who is fishing this season
