The fisherman wanted to keep it and eat it so I see no harm or foul there. Not neccesarily normal but within reason as we where on our way home, and it was not going to waste. Some light line a hook with the barb mashed down and some weights will usually save a black. In this case I do not think it would have worked. The fish was a dead fish. The captain though not happy made the best of a bad situation IMHO.

Thanks for steering me to Mario's they did a great job processing the fish . I am a happy man with lots of yellow tail in the freezer. Love eating them yellows. I think we may need to get the same bunch together and do another 6 or 8 day next year. |

I'm neither a tree hugger or an old man but I've been around long enough and have enough perspective know those two species need all the help they can get, thats all. There are not even a fraction of the sharks that used to around ten or fifteen years ago, thats an undisputed fact. Thats why its included in the code of ethics in the first place.
As for the Black, The release starts before you grind it all the way up to the surface. I know the water is gin clear at lupe and when the crew sees that 50' down, its a black, you stop winding and let it 'burp' and then finish winding it up harm free for the actual release. Its very simple and effective. Worst case, even if the fish is belly up and floating and not moving, doesn't mean its dead. Not by along shot. Just puncture it distented bladder and away it goes. You wouldn't expect the angler to know those things but you would expect it of a "professional crew".
It just seems that there is too much hipocracy...say what you mean and mean what you say... boats should either embrace the code of ethics or not but don't say one thing then do another.

So glad that even though you where not there, you know all of the facts.
And yes the water on the lee side of the island is gin clear most of the time (Of course we where on the north outside and it was snotty). I posted the pics as they where part of the trip. I also posted my opinion on the condition of the fish. Several people where kind enought to PM me with questions on why the black was kept, and I PM'd them with full details. All of their concerns where satisfied. I also am concerned about shark stocks world wide, but there is not enough info on Mako stocks presently to say one way or the other for at least that particular species. I do hope that you hold yourself to the high standard of ethics that you seem to require of others. I hold to my opinion of no harm no foul, and you are certainly welcome to yours. Just so you know I am one of those guys that refuses to keep calico's as they take so long to grow. Tree hugger maybe a little, Old certainly. This is my last post on this subject. I wish you well.
