| 3 Day Trip In The Planning Stages
Hi all
A buddy of mine and myself are looking at a 3 day out of San Diego in August or September. Any advice on what boat to take and what type of rods and reels I would need. I have an Avet MJX on a Calstar WC270H, Avet LX (Looking for a 40lb rod?), and a Avet EX Narrow 2 speed on a Seeker all roller Classic Series rated 60 to 100lbs. I know there's a lot of options and being a Newbie on San Diego fishing does'nt help. Any suggestions would be appreciated

spend some time reading threads in the Long range forums.....also, one of our own BD'ers has a site called San Diego Long Range Sportfishing - Home
with some excellent stuff.
As far as boats, are you looking for 5 star or 2 star? (2 stars catch fish too!)
For a 3-5 day, I'll take the Vagabond. Good Luck!

Joe,
Im sure you will get lots of response here. I will give you my quick .10 cents as im just lounging today...
3 days will probably have you fishing the outer banks looking for tuna or yellowtail and dodos fishing meter marks and or kelps. You will be fishing 25-40 line most of the trip flylining sardines or possibly chovies this year. If you have sardines Id fish 30-40 (40 preferred), and if you have chovies you will probably be fishing 20-25lb line. You may use your EX if you run into bigger bluefin or bigeye which is a bonus but seems to be rare.
For boats maybe try the Vagabond or the Searcher, both take alot of trips in that range. You may also be able to get a lug a buddy 2 for 1 on the BMS or BigGame. For a little more luxury, you might be able to find a 3 day on one of the Long Range boats in the fleet. Will cost more, but you will enjoy the ameneties.
Regardless, make sure the crew approves of your preferred knot. Have them help you check your drags. Listen to the crew. Dont be to proud to ask. Have a great time..

To all
Thanks for all the great advice. I was thinking of the Dominator and what is it rated 2 or 5 star? As long as I'm not sleeping with the catch
And Listen to the Crew!!!!!!!

Hey Joe,
I know it's a little bit of a drive but if you don't have plans for this Sunday you could head down to San Diego to the sport fishing landings for "Day at the Docks". Some of the boats have an "open house" where you can tour the boat and meet the crew.
Good luck!

Get on the Vagabond. Very reasonably priced and you won't find a harding fishing captain around. Mike Lackey is one of the more personable captains I have fished with, you can just tell the guy loves what he does. They run a bunch of 3 and 4 day trips around the time you are trying to go. Good luck, Chad

Keep looking for a boat! Your first choice is not the wise one IMO.

Take a look at Islander. They have a couple of 3 dayers on the schedule in September.

Gotta go with the Vagabond or Islander for all of the reasons already stated. Good captains, great fish handling,Both are clean, long range boats ( the Vagabond runs 10 day trips and the Islander is the old Red Rooster II) so you will get that "Long Range" feel on your trip and you will learn alot. I can't comment on the Dominator because I have never fished it....I know that many of the BD crew like it for their 1.5 day trips. Not sure of the accomadations. I disagree with Lend-a-fish about the "3 day is for......." comments though ( I'm sure Jason was kidding)
3 day trips are a good way to get a feel for "time on the water". On shorter trips your fishing the clock and a 3 day gives you that morning, afternoon, evening bite opportunity for a couple of days.
Whichever boat you choose.....have fun
tight lines
