HELP NEED Tips and Tackle AND GEAR First Long Range Trip Excel 16 day

Any and all suggetions welcome. I will be traveling from NY so I will keep my rods and reels to a minimum. I will bring 1 40, 1 50, 1 60, 2 100 & 2 130lb outfits. The rods will be calstar GF and the reels will be Avets. The rest of the tackle and gear is wide open. Any suggestions related to getting the "bite" would be greatly appreciated.

Get very well schooled by a crew member or knowledgable angler onboard about bait selection, how to catch the bait in the dipnet without hurting it or others, how to get the bait on the hook, how to get the bait in the zone.
Listen to the crew when you have one on. So many anglers get in a zone, and can't hear the crew member giving them hints while hooked on a bigun.
Have a great trip, put in your rail time, and you'll do good.

Thanks Dave,

I wish the reels were Accurates!!! From what I read the 30 and the 50 are the sheezy!!! I think the Avets will do just fine.

You are very well equipped. Toyotas are fine, but Lexus are better. Have tons of fun.

Re: HELP NEED Tips and Tackle AND GEAR First Long Range Trip Excel 16 day

I'm a novice to the long range scene (2 years) but I have learned quite a few things. David speaks the truth. I've already scene a lot of nice fish lost to people not listening to the crew. They know what they're doing and want you to get the fish more than anyone else.
A few nice things to have:
When you get here, hit up a sporting goods store and but a cheap colapsible chair. Realy nice for chilling on the deck and for those long troll rotations.
Bring trash bags for dirty clothes.
Few towels for bathing.
Extra set of dikes/pliers.
Tape for fingers.
Have really good, comfortable insoles in whatever you'll be fishing in. Lots of time standing at the rail.
A couple of different weights of jackets.
Beanies for cold nights.
For gear, sounds like you've hit everything but I bring and least one jig stick over 9'. Nothing better that pulling on average grade fish on the long rod!

For tackle, theres been lots of threads on it (do a search, there's some really good info) but to hit the highlights:
Raider jigs, catch jigs, or bombs for wahoo. If you can afford it, a couple of marauders. If not, use the boats gear.
Lots of yoyo jigs (salas 6x) and a few surface iron (if fishing long rod) in birdshit, scrambles egg, blue chrome, and blue in white.
Lots of hooks including live bait, flyliners, cricle, and ringed.
And the list goes on.

I've tried it but I prefer the Seaguar.
You want to be fishing minimum 100lb test on the kite. The heavier the better. Be ready to wind like hell!!

Re: HELP NEED Tips and Tackle AND GEAR First Long Range Trip Excel 16 day

Jeff,
The crew hates to loose big fish as much as the angler so following their directions is in your best interest. Be innovative during the slow times, try a different approach than everyone else. For instance, chunk if you see everybody's fishing bait, sinker rig if everyone is flylining or try a different type of bait. One approach that I have been using for the last 5 years with good success is a short (15 foot) top shot on my 100# rig when fishing sardines. It allows the smaller bait to swim away from the boat easier and get to the bite zone in better shape giving you a better chance of getting bit. I know there are those who are against short top shots because they feel the losses are higher but I have not experienced any problems. Besides, you got to hook it before you can loose it. One last thing that Tommy on the "Supreme" has drilled into my head, the longer the fish is in the water, the greater chance it has to escape. So keep the handle turning, you will have plenty of time to rest on the ride home. Look forward to your trip report.

Scott

300 and 40 looks the same to a fish on the kite, the line is never in the water. fish heavy.
