Terminal Tackle/Jigs for 6day to Guadalupe

I'm a newb so forgive me if this is a redundant post... after all I am a NorthCal freak.

My first trip (SouthCal) is going to be on the Excel next Sept on a 6 day. I am confused on the assortment of tackle available. Not rods/reels, as there is a lot of posts on this. Just the Terminal Tackle and Jigs that works for that time of year in Guadalupe; that's the info I'm hoping to get. I'm am sure if I go back far enough on this site or 976 i might find it... but really, if there are folks on here that could point me to those links or just post their opinion, that would be great!

Thanks in advance!

Re: Terminal Tackle/Jigs for 6day to Guadalupe

Guadalupe has a ton on big yellow tails. Most are caught on live bait on the bottom. Gamogotzu 2/0 ,4/0 hooks,( at least 3 packs) 8 oz. 12 oz weights 10 each, flour carbon leaders 40# and 100 # . heavy swiviles, make sure you have plenty heavy jigs Blue and white , yellows ,scrambled eggs
silvers, mackeral, and sardine colors. light jigs for surface same colors.

For trolling feathers mexican flag, green yellow, black and purple, pink for
dodos, thrown in blue and white. Make sure to ask at the landing, and talk to the crew before you leave they will tell you what the hot colors are. That can change day to day.

Extra line and flour carbon leaders are a must. You can rent Heavy Tackle
at the Landing. Check for availabliy before you arrive.

2 sets of cutting pliers.
Sun glasses and extra hats, the wind blowes real hard on that island and will take the hat off your head in a gust. sun tan lotion and bandaids for line cuts.
small knife for cutting bait.
Rubber deck boots are a must!

On a 6 day you will be fishing Tuna off the island so you will need 30 lb.
rods as will as 40 and 80 lb. for trolling and fishing big yellows.Avet reels,
Penn Int. 30 WTS and ballanced rods.

Your going on one of the best boats in the fleet it should be a great trip.

Make sure you bring some flyliner hooks in the 1/0, 2/0, & 3/0 sizes. Priceless when the tuna get finiky and the bait doesn't want to swim worth a shit.
Make sure you bring a few jigs in the "birdshit" color. Also bring extra 40lb line. You'll be fishing it most of the time.

Re: Terminal Tackle/Jigs for 6day to Guadalupe

Kurt, great choice. Congratulations on selecting a 6 day for your first trip. That's about where the change from a short multi day trip to a true long range trip settles in. Those 5-6 day trips that have the time to fish offshore, Lupe, and or Benitos/Cedros are a true vacation.

Look over the reports from this season and you'll see that the gang was having to fish lots of fluorocarbon leaders to get bit and then lost some/lots of fish to the Taxman. If I were going to do a September 6 day, I'd want to be fishing an Avet small two speed like the JX or LX and have it totally loaded up with 60 lb hollow spectra and I'd be fishing short, like 25' topshots or wind-ons of 40lb mono and 50 lb fluorcarbon. See about getting some glue and make your own stealth pattern wind-ons. Some of the guys, and I think ZZZZZ is one of them are advocates of using glue only for this application and have enjoyed great results. If you need help with this, just say the word. Plenty of advice out there. Maybe you could take the journey to the San Francisco Fred Hall Show and get some first hand looks at how this is done as far as making end loops and inserting mono and fluor into hollow spectra. San Diego knot to a small circle hook if you can butt hook a bait with it or if there's good current for the long soak. Experiment with the shoulder hooking method and don't worry so much about terminal tackle. I would consider tuna as the primary target species on this trip. Yellowtail will eat flylined baits, too. Maybe a Maruader or Bonita if you have one so you can get in on the troll and take a shot at a wahoo. Also, have a setup ready to go each time the boat stops to anchor up. Make this a 30 lb outfit with a 40 lb wire leader or a solid 25 lb outfit with a 27 lb wire leader. As the boat gets ready to set the anchor, pin on a lively dine and fish it until the boat has settled in. Might just pick up a wahoo as they're a curious fish that has a tendency to come check things out. There will be plenty of time to fish the long soak for tuna once the boat swings back on the anchor and settles down in relationship to the wind and current.

Just a few random thoughts. You've got lots of anticipation time; that should be fun as well.

Re: Terminal Tackle/Jigs for 6day to Guadalupe

Wow! Great advice. Really helps me to connect some dots and get a better feeling for what to expect. So far I've got: RODS: Calstar GFGR 765ML, 700H, 800M, and a 700ML REELS: TORIUM 16, PENN 16VSX, and 300TRQ TACKLE: 7200 SKB Tackle Box with rocket launchers (Seems too big) Things I want: RODS: 2 more, type ?? (maybe another 40 pound, and a 80-100 pound) REELS: 3 more, Avet JX or LX, PENN 30VSX or 50VSX, and ?? With that said, am I on the right track? and what would be the best set up for this gear on a 6 day? Again thanks a ton for the response! Its way more than I expected.

Re: Terminal Tackle/Jigs for 6day to Guadalupe

Yo Kurt,

You will have a blast on the Excel 6 day and welcome to long range fishing.

We have had a charter on the Excel for years in that time frame, infact we just moved up for the second week in Sept. to the Labor day charter 6 day. Historically this trip has seen 2 - 4 days of Yellowfin Tuna fishing to 120 pounds at the Lupe. On rare occasions we have been fortunate to run into wahoo. Additionally you will get in 1 or 2 days of yellowtail up to 60 pounds at the other Islands and perhaps a day of bottom fishing for reds or halibut. Of course this will change with conditions. Generally speaking you will fish 40 pound test line with your choice of smaller reels. Some of the folks like the 2 speed Avets and many of us are fishing single speeds. I fish the Saltist 40 high speeds and love them as well as the 870 high speed Accurate. If you go this route put the crank arm/handle to its longest length. The smaller Avet 2 speeds have really been popular lately but I prefer the single speed in 40 pound. These reels are used about 80 percent of the time.

If you are only doing a 6 day the need for a 30 or 50 size reel would be rare. If this is a have to have situation than stick with the 30 size in a narrow. If you are sold on the Penn then the 30VSX should be out soon. If not the Avet 30 pro 2 speed is a great reel. I happen to fish Accurate's. As I said before, expect to see these rigs in the racks either the entire trip or almost the entire trip.

A 16 or 12 size two speed is a wonderful reel for a 6 day as a heavier line setup and I would go with that over the 30 or 50 with your 16VSX already in your inventory. We all have a Ho written accross our foreheads but make sure you get the most bang for your buck.

I have recently been touting the joys of the Super Seeker 6470H as a true 40 to 60 pound stick which can be used with a single or two speed reel and provides a real solution to one stick covering many conditions. This rod can easily fish your 16VSX or your Torque.

Once you have gotten past your first 6 dayer, you can start making some more informed decisions. I do not doubt you will be hooked and plan some longer range trips especially if you have the money for the gear you are mentioning. At that point you can start thinking about the bigger rigs and reels.

I would also contact Cathy or Betty at the front office as I am not sure if they have loaner gear or possibly the boat will have trolling gear for you to use when your number is up. their rigs will already be set with the proper trolling jigs.

As far as terminal gear. I LOVE ringed hooks for all applications especially in a pick bite. If the fishing is wide open you probably wont need them but the lupe is rarely wide open. Yellowtail at the Islands can be so have both ringed and unringed available for all applications.

I tested Owner Flyliners last year and found they were not sufficient in wire diameter and strength for the tuna over 40 pounds. There are many other choices out there and the expensive, boutique hooks, may not be the best choices. I would call Guy over at Ringedhooks.com where many of us get our ringed hooks. He is an encyclopedia of hooks of all brands and will steer you in the right direction. Get a reasonable assortment of circle and J hooks so you can make your own decision on preference. The Excel recommends circle hooks but you can decide for yourself. You can also talk to Guy about Spanyid Raiders for Tuna, Yellowtail and yoyoing the bottom, though the Lupe is mostly a bait bite.

For Yellowtail I am in love with the Scrambled Egg 6X junior by Salas which always works for me as well as the green booger. Lighter top water jigs are a blast as well since you can see the crash on the jigs. I LOOOOOOVE jig fishing on those trips.

As far as carrying a ton of sinkers... Don't... Bring a small assortment of torpedos and sliders as the boat should have plenty on board and they have very fair prices. Why lug all that around and take up space in your box. I would much rather fill it with jigs...

Spectra is almost a must on all your reels as you can easily respool the top shots when needed as you will only be fishing 10 ft to 50 yds depending on your tastes. Flouro in 40 pound and 50 pound should be considered but practice your means of attaching the flouro to the mono before you leave for your trip and test them with a pull gauge. I happen to like the back to back Uni or seagar knots but like I said practice at home and make sure you are getting a high percentage of line strength in your connection. If it seems you are not getting what you need make sure you ask your local tackle shop to help you or get help from the crew on the boat. Bad knots/connections are the number one reason fish are lost.

The Excel web site gives a very good listing of tackle and clothing to bring on any given range of trip. The Web site will fill in the holes in what is not noted here.

Consider this 6 day a learning session to figure what you might need in the future. Do you like shorter or longer sticks, Circle or J hooks, one speed or two speed reel, stiffer or softer rods, etc. Even Techniques of Rail vs. Harness or just a rod belt. Maybe a combination of the above. You have chosen a fantastic boat with a fantastic crew so there will be lots of teachers. Don't be afraid to ask even if it seems like a dumb question. Make sure you ask early in the trip so you dont miss out on key information. Its probably the same question 15 other guys would like to know the answer to.

One thing new commers rarely ask, but should, is how to properly get a bait out of the wells (The Excel uses a large Pan) and how to gently put the hook into the bait as well as where on the bait to place it. Do this before the fishing starts but at a point the crew is not busy elsewhere. Usually, about the time you are rigging up is a great time. If you are concerned, they will also show you some new cool knots you can practice.

Best of luck on your trip and just have fun.

Jamie

Re: Terminal Tackle/Jigs for 6day to Guadalupe

This is great! Awsome info! I went down to IWE Sports here in Sacramento today to get some line put on a reel for a Humbolt Squid fishing trip im going on next weekend. While I was there, I saw some guy there talking to the shop owner about an Accurate 870 Boss 2-speed. This guy just got back from a 13 day Shogun trip that sounded amazing. I asked to have a look at the reel... So guess what? Im screwed up now. My plan was to put a Penn 200 TRQ on the Calstar 800M... now i'm thinking about buying that Accurate! $169 more bucks... crap! I havent even gone on a Tuna trip yet!

Hard to beat a leverdrag for big fish. For your Torque, get with Cal. He's beefing up the pinion. I guess there have been failures already. Sounds a little bit of operator error but with Cal's upgrade it should last longer.

You also might want to look at the new Avet Hoo-X when it comes out.

Re: Terminal Tackle/Jigs for 6day to Guadalupe

Kurt,

One other note: your 800M is a 30 pound stick not a 40. If you are going to spend the money on the new two speed Accurate or any 40 pound reel, make sure you have a proper stick to match it. Like I said, the new Super Seeker 6470h would be great for that reel as with the two speed configuration, and placing the handle arm at its maximum length, you will be able to fish 40 to 60 pound top shots/windons. If you like a longer stick, though mine is on the way so I havent had a chance to fish it yet, a Super Seeker 6480XH might be a consideration for fishing 40 to 60 pound test. Also consider discussing with your tackle shop rail fishing which means you might want to lengthen your sticks butt length as well as the foregrip. Besides, at this point of your fishing career and the monies you are about to spend you should have your rods custom built to specifications better suited for your size and fishing style. Besides, then you can pick your own, personalized, wrapping colors, which makes it easier to find your gear in the racks. The price differential is minimal.

Best of luck.

Jamie

If you're night fishing the dropper loop at Guadalupe, use 100# or 130#. Trust me on this.
