I had the pleasure of fishing with a great bunch of guys on the SOA this past week. This charter has been together for quite some time and has some real quality sticks on board. Left the slip around 1300 hours and rolled over to bait doat. Boat was skippered by Brian as Mike had the trip off. Brian has to be one of the coolest skippers around. Low key, mellow and friendly sums him up.
Brian meticulously picked through the receivers and proceeded to load 380 scoops on board. The Indy was getting bait next to us and I was amazed at how big she is.
Plan was to go straight to the rocks. We arrived 2 days later, seas seemed like they were 5-7 so it took a little longer, to 83 degree water. A couple of guys got some nice skinnys on the troll and the hot color was the Dorado colored marauder. After a few stops, Brian metered some nice fish and we began a steady pick of nice size YF. I got picked up on 40.
After 10 trips around the boat JP stuck the gaff in this.
I ended up with 2 for the day and ended up losing 2 at deep color. There were 3 other skinnys brought aboard on Raiders and bait.
We stayed overnight at the rocks and on day 2, after getting spooled on my 665H I decided to go a little larger (Avet 402W with 60 pound TS) on a GF 760L. First bait out got rolled and after an hour got this to the boat.
Ended up with 2 more for the day 80 and 90.
Taxman was out in force.
Day 3 fishing we ran into a huge school of Dodo's in the 10-25 pound range. You could not get away from them as they were biting unbaited hooks, cigarette butts etc.
Made our way to Clam Bank for some nice yellow (15-20) on iron.
Day 4 we hit Cedros. That salt mine just keeps getting bigger and bigger.
There were a nice amount of trophies brought aboard (40-45) in a short time.
Did a little rock fishing for some big reds and lings at San Martin and then made our way home.
I can not describe what a first class operation the SOA is. JP, Jimmy, Matt and Scott are the best at what they do. Dan and Dean served up some of the best food that I’ve had on LR trips. All of the guys on the charter were top notch and was honored to share the rail with them. I thought that I could throw iron until I fished with some of these guys. Gary was throwing it the length of a football field. It always amazes me how much you learn on these trips if you just open your ears and come in with a good attitude.
Got back to the dock with 1300 pounds of fish.
Met Big Ron at the dock Good seeing you bro and thanks again for the hook up.
