Lupe, moon phases and current?

I went to Lupe twice this year. One of the things on the second trip (sept 13-18) was a serious lack of current. It really screwed up getting the baits out, the bite was a slow pick, and generally tough fishing.

On the first trip, the current was "ripping" and the bite was on (55yft on boat in a day - for 20 of us)

So im trying to figure out scheduling for next year in the mid-aug to late-september timeframe for a 5-6 day trip and looking at the moon phases.

What correlation, if any, is there between the moon phase and the current? I would suspect the tide changing has something to do with it, but also wave/wind conditions are gonna screw with it.

Basically Im looking for opinions on moon-current correlation, effect on the bite, and getting some ideas on when to schedule for next year. Also, is this phenomenon a local issue to Lupe or is it in general when selecting Yellow Fin Tuna trips "on the anchor"

Thoughts?

Re: Lupe, moon phases and current?

I was at the Lupe a copule of times this year also. For the last few years I've been scheduling my 3 or 4 trips a year on or close to a full moon. Current was ripping both times. First time it was real tough catching. I think only 12 tuna the first day, and just a few the second day - for 35 guys. Second time there was a lot more action, a slow to moderate pick all day.

I've been trying to go on the full moon but I think for the next few years I'm going to go on the new moon. I was talking to Andy Gates about it and his comment was that the moon (full or new) can definitely affect the fishing, both good and bad. He said he perfers the new moon. I think I'm going to give it a try. I get the impression with the Lupe that sometimes there aren't too many fish there, and sometimes they are there and just pickey.

Re: Lupe, moon phases and current?

I was out after you were on the night of the new moon...the current was definitely rippin, but the fish were not biting. Tim said that the fish were out in deeper water, but were still around. I think I will plan my trip next year during the previous new moon...
