moon effects?

Hey I'm a new guy to this offshore stuff, been fishing inshore since I got stationed here and now I've been chasing yellow and dodo's all year and had a good year. Sold my Plastic yak and got a three day trip comming up. From what I understand that full moon is bad for offshore fishing because they feed at night and not so well in the day. Our trip is headed out on the 27th after the new moon and for some reason there are not many people jumping on this trip, when its a bitch to get a lot of them. I allready know we just got all this cold shitty water in recently and its slow right now, but I don't fully understand the moon effects on offshore fishing, maybe that has something to do with it. I've been googleing it and of course found all kinds of stuff for the wrong coast. I'd be greatfull for any advice.

Re: moon effects?

Here's the thing . . . we've all been on great trips on a 'bad moon' and slow trips on a 'good moon' phase. I truly believe it's little more than a convenient excuse for a slow trip, which sometimes just happens. Don't worry about it! Go whenever you can, as often as you can. The captains of the long-range fleet work their asses off trying to find fish, no matter what the moon, weather, or karmic energy flow may be.

Re: moon effects?

The moon is kind of like bananas though we seem to be more affected by the monthly extreme high and low tides. Here on the Pacific it seems to effect more inshore than ofshore. We have 20ft tides twice a day where as the Atlantic side has i tide every 24 hours and a bout a max of 3 feet.

In california I rememeber as a kid the moon tides etc seemed to be importtant to grunion but off shore Hmmmmm I'm sure a local there will set you straight. Use a tide book and beware of nuying tide clocks as the majority are set to read east coast.

Re: moon effects?

I've always heard that the full moon was the best time to fish. There have been some great bluefin bites that happen on the full moon. And of course when it does everyone says it's because of the full moon. The next best time is suppose to be the new moon. It's not really on the full moon or new moon but "they" say 3 days before and 3 days after.

I don't know that it matters as much as anyone thinks. When I was on the Rooster last (during a full moon) I asked Andy about the moon and he said that the full and new moons definitely affect the fishing. Then he said sometimes good and sometimes bad. So I'm thinking its not that big a deal, and you can't really predict much from it.

Go fishing and have fun. Hope you get lucky.

Re: moon effects?

Do not worry about it. Go and slay some fish and enjoy yourself.
The phases are more inportant and significant for inshore and shoreline fishing.

Re: moon effects?

I believe the cycle of the moon, not just the phase comes into play. Explain the full moon seen in the middle of the day. during these cycles, the fish can't feed by the romantic light of the moon. or a week of completely overcast night during the full moon, hence no light shines through leads me to believe it is more than just the light of a full moon. Maybe it's a good moon, but the waters cold and dirty, or a bad moon but all the other conditions are there and you get fish. Also maybe whats bad for the tunas, stimulates the marlin, and even more the dorados, or reverse.......who friggin knows.......GO FISHING....lots and lots and you will end up with more questions than actual, factual answers!!!!

Re: moon effects?

Albacore fishing is slow during the full moon, but Blue Fin Tuna can be epic during a full moon. Wait, maybe a few days before the full moon. Or is it after? I think this maybe only applies during months that end in y, or maybe an r. Oh shit, who cares just go fishing whenever you can and report back.
