| 40lb or 50lb at the lupe
This September will be my first trip to Guadalupe. I have recieved a lot of mixed feedback on this subject and was wondering what those that have fished guadalupe on this board would do. My main stick for lupe is an Avet LX 6/3 on a grabowski 6470H. The reel will be backed with 65lb spectra. I want to know if I should top shot it with 40lb or 50lb. Some that I have talked to say you won't get bit on 50lb and others say 40lb is to light.
Thanks, Chad

I would go 50lbs on the top shot , Long soaks and besides you can also use that rigg for the dropper loop for the yellows.

We go the second week of Sept on the RRIII almost evry year--your going to fish homeguard yellowtail 30-50lbs --you need to stop them before they rock you--I use 50lb and they are not line shy-you with also be fishing for yellowfin--30-100lb is the norm--30-40lb with a good free casting reel has worked for me-hope this helps

Just like Uncle Bill said, those fish(Yelllows) aren't line shy down there at all, hell even the Bluefin eat 50#. And you will want 50# when a hugh Homeguard picks you up and heads south anyways. I'm going in Aug. can't wait either

You don't want to down grade your tackle in place of proper bait selection and presentation.
Go with the 50. You can always put 40 on if you are haveing trouble getting bit, but if they go right off the bat you are going to be glad you have the heavier line on your reel.

I fish 60# or even 80# if they are biting good on the dropper loop and 40# flyline on the long soak with flouro if the water is clear and blue as it is most of the time....
Hopefully be able to make it down there this year..middle/late Oct..last two years in a row my trip has been cancelled dur to weather....
Bring a bass rig on the long rod and fish Calicos there too....they are slugs there since they get little pressure
Oh and don't forget about the whitefish...hehe

see a trend yet? start with the heavier stuff. you can always cut your topshot off, or tie on a short fluro leader of lighter line if they're shy.

I fished there last year I went 13 for 13 on 35-50 pound yellowtails and didnt have one problem using 40# izorline XXX. As a matter of fact there was a guy that caught a 99.1# Yellow Fin Tuna on 40#.

Try 60# soft steel ultra. Really thin and it comes in wind on ts spools.

Best advise for lupe? Bring the 40lb flouro. It was invented or places like that.

Thanks everyone. Looks like going with 50lb and bringing the 40lb flouro is the way to go. I have 50lb on my yellow tail special and 40lb on my Avet JX but they are both single speeds and from what I heard last year, all the single speed does is feed the sharks. I have some really fun trips planned this year on the Vagabond and RRIII. Can't wait to learn all I can form the captains and crew on these boats. Never fished with Mike, but it's a bluefin trip and I heard he is a bluefin machine. I fished with Andy last year, man that guy loves to fish. I've always appreciated the help I have recieved from this site and hopefully after a few more years of experience I will be able to give back. Once again, thanks. Chad
