5 day tackle

Hey guys just wanted to ask a question. I will be doing my first 5 day this year and would like to know what rod and reel selections would you bring along as a bare minimumn. Like most of you, if I brought everything i could think of it would probably be overkill (not to mention back breaking work carrying all that shit) Bottom line if u only could take 3 rod and reels, what would they be and why?

Re: 5 day tackle

just 3 rods?? that is bare minimums.. seriously, if you're going on a 5 day borrow, rent, steal more rods/reels.. be prepared for everything..
-40# surface iron
-25# bait rod
-40# bait rod
-60-80# 2 speed dropper loop rod
-50# yoyo rod
-60# 2 speed bait rods

i like to have everything designated for it's purpose.. last thing you wanna do is be changing your setups while others are hooking fish..

if i had to pick just 3, IMO this is what i'd take
60# bait and for dropper loop
-2 speed reel(TLD 30, or Avet EX 4/02)
-765ML

50# yoyo rig... back up bait too.
-TN30 or TOR30, 65# spectra backed
-Seeker Blacksteel 6465H

40# bait rig.... i'd take no less than 40# if you're going to Guadalupe
-TN30, TOR30, 50# spectra backed
-Seeker Blacksteel 6470 Grabowski special

good luck..
most of all, have fun!

Hey Nelz,
Going on a 5 day also. I have an avet lx 2 speed on a 6470H grabowski and a avet jx single speed on a 6470 grabowski. Have 50lb on my yellow tail special and Seeker Blacksteel 6465H. Would you put 40lb on both the avets or put 50lb on the lx 2 speed. I heard 50lb has a hard time getting bit at guadalupe.

Re: 5 day tackle

After you have been rocked numerous times at the 'lupe.......50 # looks pretty damn good. If the Grande Model of Yellowtail are on the chew....50 will do. The other thing is that your gear ain't going catch jack sitting in the garage.....nothing worse than getting into a hot bite and having to retie or have an equip. breakdown....thats why they have carts to carry your stuff. I also prescribe to the idea of less rods but interchangable reels, bring some extra reels to switch out. It is cool to "field test" different set-ups and unless you go on alot of trips you may want to make the most of your 5 day......The last thing..........I like a 20# for Albies........197 Accurate should be illegal ........JMHO

What trip / boat is your 5 day?

Re: 5 day tackle

I wasn't thinking a 5 day in November. Let me think about that. I am on the PQ in a couple of weeks for a quick tune up before a 7 day in June.

you're fine with 50#.. if the bite is scratchy then use a 6' section of Flouro tied with a seaguar knot.. we didn't have any failures, just GWS
your LX 2 speed will be your fish killer for sure!
a few years ago on the Apollo in Nov, we limited on Yellow Fin Tuna 50-90#.. we learned alot from JJ on that trip...
nose hook a sardine if you got alot of current and it's a long soak, the bait won't spin in the current and then you can slow crank back in to try to get bit on the wind in..

at Lupe i wouldn't fish less than 40# some monster Yellowtail lurking
