Help on set ups for 4-6 day trips

I am looking to up grade in three areas for next year. Any help on what to buy would be greatly appreciated:

1. Quality 40 pound reel.
2. 50lb set up. Small 2 speed reel. Mostly for Guadalupe and Bluefin. Heard some good things about the Avets. Good 50lb rod that casts well.
3. Jig stick. Reel and rod for Guadalupe yellowtail.

Thanks for any help
Chad

I'm sure you'll get a lot of responses. I'll tell you what I use, although I certainly am not an expert.

40 lb reel: Torium 30

50 lb reel: Avet LX 6/3 two speed. A larger option would be a TLD 30.

Jig Stick: 90J or 100J. Torium 30 or an Avet LX 6/3

Go to Noah's & check out a bunch of different stuff...

Have them put together some rods & reels for you that way you can feel what is comfortable for you.

1. baja special
2.avet MLX, or satlist 50, baja special rods, 700h or XH, 6480.
3.90J, 100J, ulua, all on either a saltist 40 or newell p533 5.5 or JX 2 speed, only cause you could get one of the 40+ yellers and thats when the low gear is a blessing.

Re: Help on set ups for 4-6 day trips

40lb- Avet LX with a GUSA 70plus
50-60lb- Avet EX 4/02 with a GUSA 70xh
jigstick- JX 2spd 90j or 100j

I know the EX is a little heavy, but if you combine it with a graphite rod its not so bad. Its a much better real for dropper loop than the LX. It has a hell of a lot more pulling power...

Good luck,
Drue

Re: Help on set ups for 4-6 day trips

Drue,

Have your tried the 70XH on 50-60? I really hope you aren't planning on pushing it to 60. The 65XH works for 50 but the 70XH IMO is a 40lb rod. I sold mine as I didn't feel I could push it to 50 with confidence.

For the 50lb are you using this for the yoyo, long bait soaks, casting a bait to bluefin schools. I don't know how willing you are but maybe an 800H for casting into the deeper boils. yoyo you could get away with something like a CJBF65H.

I would go pull on everything myself. I don't like the 700H for 50, wait or for anything but a lot of people do and same goes with the 700 and 800M. I like Seekers but some like Calstar. Go to Noah's as I understand they carry everything under the sun and pull on some rods. If they don't have a particular brand go to another store and pull too.

For a 40lb reel I'd use a Torium 16 or Saltist 30T backed with spectra to the top enough for a short topshot.

Isn't the Torium 16 a little small for 40lb. I was thinking more in lines of the Torium 30. As for the 50lb outfit, it will be used for casting baits and long bait soaks, hopefully for Guadalupe. I'm happy with my current 50lb yo-yo outfit.

Re: Help on set ups for 4-6 day trips

I have never seemed to have a problem fishing 40 on my 16 although I do pack it to the top with 50lb JB and use a 10ft topshot...I manage well over 300 yards of total line. I don't know if you fish spectra or not, but if you don't then I would use a torium 30. If you do use spectra, no use in packing all that spectra on a 30. If you do use some spectra but not packed to the top then get a Torium 20 for that.

I'd definitely go two-speed on that 50lb outfit or you will regret it when a nice yellowfin jumps on.
