hooked up now what?

I have read all the posts concerning type of gear to use on the different lenghts of trips and have learned much, thanks.

My questions concern fighting the fish onced hooked up.
Should I apply maxium wood to the fish once the hook is set?
Or should I slow down and let the rod and drag beat the fish down then go after it?

Once line starts stripping of the reel I seem to get to excited and I tend to try and horse the fish in.
Pump and grind or straight grind?

How much bend should I try and maintain?

Going on the RR III 10 days this fall and hoping/assuming that I am going to tangle with a bigger grade of fish than I have in the past. Any tips or advice will help me improve my count.

I like side pot.

Okay I leave Nov 13-23 on the Shogun. I got $300 George that our trip will catch more 100lb + Tunafish then your trip. Weighed at the dock....

I don't know the other boyz so I feel weird betting them . I hope this Hurricane sets up the Finger for us. We need that same current and water to go COW<

Oh all we need is a internet shake.

we cant do weighed at dock. the RSW's on the star require the fish to be weighed before its gullted, bled and gilled.

but the scale on the star is certified, and both Tim and Randy post the results in the reports.

Back to the question at hand, ya hi-jackers..

I've learned, Once hooked up and certain you have a solid set and the fish begins it's first run, you would loosen the drag a bit. A combination of line in the water & the diameter of line on spool getting smaller creates tremendous amounts of drag. The most pressure is at the hook and the first 20-30 feet of line. If anything breaks, it's there. Once you begin to take line and the fish allows it, you then increase drag and winch it in. As the fish gets close to the boat, you wanna button down and PULL. When the Tuna fish is making its circle at the boat, the best time to pull would be when it's starting to make it's upward swing to the top of the circle. Continue to add pressure as Tuna is at the top of the circle. >>> Then sink the gaff.

Let your rod do the work by keeping a good bend.

Made sense to me ...

thats how they sort the fish once they come back.

when you catch a fish, the deckhands spike it, bleed it and staple one of your numbered tags to the gillplate. then at the end of the trip when they take the fish out of the holds, they sort them by # so you can take them home.
