Long Range Help

Hey, trying to set up my arsenal so that I may start doing long range trips next year.............

Thinking of doing a 5 day next summer or fall first...........hopefully a BD charter.....

I have:

Avet LX- 65pd spectra with 20yd 50# flouro top....
Avet JX- 65pd spectra with 20yd 40# flouro top....
Avet 4/0 2spd- 510 yds of 100lb spectra and 15 yds of 60# flouro top....

Shimano TLD 15- 30#Ande mono.......
PENN 500 Jigmaster- 25#Ande mono......

I am also already planning for "tax return time" to purchase

AVET 50 narrow- 130# spectra and 100# flouro......

Any suggestions from you experienced long rangers would be greatly appreciated.....

Curtis

Agreed. Your arsenal is similar to mine. However, I just bought a 90J for tossin the iron. Going on a 5 day in Sept.

I wouldn't call myself an "experienced" long ranger, as this will only be my 3rd LR trip. But the choices make sense given what is caught.

For me I hate graphiters for firing. I cant load them up very well.

Calstar 90j, 100j, The Seekers are nice too.

You have 25#-60# and you will have 100#. You will be fine.

The reels you have are excellent reels. The Lx & Jx can fish 30 - 50 LB with a quick change of the top shot. The 4/0 Avet covers the 50 to 80 range and could even be used for 100lb test. And with the new 5/0 Avet, Man you will Looking good.

On a Five day my setups are as follows
1 25 lb
1 30 lb
3 40 lb
> 1 -for bait
> 1 -for a swim bait for the slide
> 1- long rod for a iron

1 50 lb
1 60 lb
1 80 lb dropper
1 100 lb just in case

I guess I'm used to not needing the heavy gear on my five day and even 8 day trips, so a 100 lb outfit makes no sense to me. Instead, I'd be getting backups for the outfits you will be using the most. Additional 40 and 50 lb outfits. Fivers fish offshore a lot during the Summer and at Guadalupe a lot in the Summer and Fall. Gotta have a 50 lb dedicated yoyo setup, and an additional 40 lb outfit just in case you get spooled, cut off in a nasty tangle, or have a mechanical failure. On a five day, you'll rarely encounter a fish you can't take on with a good two speed 60 lb outfit, and even at that, it sits in the rack most of the time. Money wise, you can probably get two outfits for what you would spend on the 100 lb outfit.

If you want to fish dropper loop at night, use a boat rod with a 6/0 and 80 lb and if you're fortunate enough to be in a spot to fish the kite, again, use the boat rod.

Here's a good topic for another post. How many of you have used a 100 lb outfit on a five day? 8 day-10 day?

I agree with your post, and on my 5 day my 100lb will just be for trolling, unless we were incredibly lucky.
