Fall Ten day when to go?

Im looking to plan a 10 day trip this fall but im wondering the best time to go. ive been looking at taking a trip on the Vagabond and they have a 10 day trip leaving nov 25th-dec 5th. on the opposite end of the spectrum that runs 10 day trips as early as october. whats the best time to hop on a 10 day trip. for those who have been on the vagabond is it a little small or do you get used to it?

I have a 8 day booked in October. My first trip on the Vagabond. I have heard nothing but great reports about this boat and crew. Good luck.

Generally the earlier trips have better shots at the wahoo, the later Novemebr trips have a better shot at the bigger yellowfin. All 10 days are probably the best value and offer the widest variety of species caught.

The last few years the later trips have even been catching "Cows" and lots of tuna over 100#'s

I'm on the November 25th trip on the Royal Polaris

Which ever you decide good luck and we look forward to you reporting back in.

Pretty much what Branman said. I had a talk with wahoodad last year setting up my ten dayer this Fall. I chose early October because I was not so interested in chasing bigger units as much as getting more of a variety with some good opportunities at Wahoo and Dorado. Seems like the tunas caught in early October ranged up to 100 lbs, mostly on 50 and 60 lb line and that's fine with me. It's later in the season ususally when the larger Yellowfin move onto the lower banks and give the ten day trips a legitimate shot at a cow or two.

I was talking with titan05 and he's going eight days on Vagabond in early October. I think if you are going to do eight days, that would be a good time to do it. On our 8 day last year in early November we were almost all of us wishing from start to finish that it was a ten day. This year it is.

the question is :

if the early trips get into the wahoo and the later ones get into the cow tuna, do the middle trips get a little bit of both? or is that just the dead zone?

Ten day trips are all about variety. No, you will catch plenty no matter when you go.

excellent. between the 7 day i did in june, the tony reyes trip im doing in august, the ten day in the fall and our 18 day (which might as well be a friggin bloody decks charter, seeing as how 8 of us are going), someone should give me mod status in one of the long range forums!

IMO, 8 day trips are for spring/early summer, 10 day trips in the fall. Nothing worse than an 8 day fall trip where they need those extra two days to make the catch. You are still fishing the same spots as the ten day trips, but have to end your trip two days too soon. Steve K experienced this last year. Couldn't quite get to the Finger Bank, which is where the slugs where caught.
