I really like my saltist 40. Although, I think the saltist 30T would be ideal though but that clamp makes it really difficult. However Daiwa has a new after market reel clamp and so does tiburon so this may make the 30T a very nice option.

You might want to try the Newell 533 before buying it. I have one, and it sits in my reel bag. I use either the Saltist 40 or 30. But in both cases, you'll have to modify the clamps. It's pretty easy for the 40: you can just get some of the longer Penn screws. For the 30, you need to find an old Trinidad 16 clamp, and then cut screws to fit (there is a posting on how to do it on BD). I talked to Charkbait, and they said that the new Saltist clamps aren't big enough for the Ulua. I've heard that Toriums fit the rod too, but I have never used one. Enjoy! It's a great rod.

One more time...The Newell 533 with either 40 or 50#. Great set-up. To make the Newell clamp work you can either call Newell direct and order the FI832 clamp screws in a longer length or go to your local hardware store and buy 8/32 screws to the length you want. Most hardware stores will not stock the fillister style screw head that Newell uses so you may have to settle for round. As for the Saltist fans, I think the Saltist is a great reel in all respects and I sincererly mean that, I have a 40 and love it for live bait. But when it comes to jig fishing, the line pick up due to spool diameter is much greater on the Newell giving the jig a bit more action.

I'd do a Torium 20 or Saltist 40. Slightly Mo betta drags and cranking with the Torium, but it does have a tendency to blow up the anti-reverse pawl. No such similar problems with the Saltist that I've seen or had.

I go with the Toriums cause of how well they cast, crank, and feel in my hands. And they're cheap. And when they blow up, I just drop them off in Irvine on my way back to LA from SD...

With that said, I fucking love my Newells as well. But if I was hooked into the last fish I would catch before I die, I would want it to be on a Torium (Trini if I could afford it).

Ya, but the SA and TO have higher gear ratios... not sure what the actual difference in line per crank is. Don't think there's a huge difference between them...

well, i'm gonna want a 2 speed
otherwise, the trini dc 20 holds me in good stead
but, i'm now waiting for the saltist ld 40 2 speed
wide clamp, even the smaller ld's clamp to the ulua
but, i want the size and extra balls/capacity of a trini20/saltiga40 sized reel
the ld doesn't bind or weigh like the avets, love the handle, has the balls
the only thing that could pose an issue
insane freespool, it screams
birdsnest anyone

I have used newells(the most popular),trinidads 20 and 40N, but prefer avet two speeds on mine. When I hook a big fish I like to drop into that second gear. Hope that helps.

I love my Avet, but on an Ulua? Grab the Newell, grow some stones, throw the plug a mile, and kill whats on the line. Long handle on the Newell will make up for the weakness of your body
