| How important to double up?
I am planning on going on the RRIII 10 day in early November (Charkbait sponsor). I have finally aquired the following gear (see below) and am wondering how important it is to double up on rigs. If not really necessary, I would rather not drop the extra coin.
30lb - SS 6480 w/ Avet MXL 6/3
40lb - SS 6470 w/ Avet JX 6/3
50lb - SS 6470H w/ Avet HX 5/2
80lb - Seeker Classic 6460XXH with Avet 30W
100lb - SS 2x4 w/ Avet 50 SDS
30lb - Calstar GG690J with Saltiga 40 (SURFACE)
40lb - SS Ulua 9'3" w/ Avet HX 5/2 (SURFACE)
So do I really need to drop coin on double outfits? If so, which one(s) would you double up on and what rod(s)/reel(s) would you recommend to fill things out? Let me know of experiences you have been in where having doubles really made a difference...

Personally, I would double up on the 100/130 outfit. Reel failures today are rare but I have seen rods break and whole outfits get dropped overboard. More likely, you will get into a shark or a tangle and lose enough line that you have to stop fishing to re-spool. On a ten-day, the "hot bite" might only last an hour.

Looks good to me, less is more and I'm sure you will be covered if anything breaks by the boat or sponsors. Now I just need to learn to take only what I need!

Personally,I would not buy more rigs if I could resist temptation. You bought quality rigs it is unlikely thy will fail you if you treat them well. if you do think you need a back up rent one, just one. A duplicate of the one you are likely to use the most is all you really should rent IMHO. Oh and have a great trip.

Definitely double the 100/130 rig. No time to setup if the bite is on, like as mentioned above, may only last an hour. Borrow a rig from the boat, that is the easiest way to double up. They should have loaner setups for you.

Thanks guys for the input. Are the boats usually pretty cool loaning out their gear when the bite is on if something happens to mine?

Make arrangements in advance. Often all the loaner gear is spoken for by the time the trip leaves.

The boat should have what ever you need to borrow, plus all the long trips I have been on, guys always bring more than they will ever use. Make friends and try something different. But what you have is good. Love the HX
Good luck..

I might double up on the 40lb JX. This will probably be the system you fish with most. Any problem with this system when the bite is on will be upsetting. The double up will allow you to drop and go. When the bite is off, you then have time to correct the situation.
Call Mark at Charkbait. He'll set you up! Try one of the Calstar Grafighters just to mix it up.
