searcher 7 day trip

Psycho Clown reporting on the Searcher 7 Day trip.
Well we got off to a real rough start with the weather not wanting to cooperate with our plans of running down to Alijos for some Wahoo fishing. We had tropical storm Olaf causing havoc down there so we decided to make the bumpy run down to the ridge and hope the storm passed. When I say bumpy i mean bumpy. We had current running one direction, wind going another and huge swells coming at our sides that made us think we were on THE DEADLIEST CATCH show!! We got to the ridge Monday late afternoon
dropped the trollers and got a couple Mahi and yellows
Tuesday we moved further up the ridge to where Capt Art had got 32 Hoo’s on his previous trip, Unfortunate for us, they weren’t around. We did get into some nice grade Yellows of 30 plus pounds and a few more Mid twenty pound Mahi’s. 52 YF and 76 Yellowtail with 12 DoDo’s .
Wed we made a move back down the ridge to a spot Art had metered some good yellowfins and boy were they there. Can you say Carnage!!! The searcher crew started yellin Flurry, Flurry. which was quite funny the way they were doing it. Anyway every time they yelled flurry, ten to 15 anglers would hook up one after the other. And the tuna shuffle would be on. We bagged 196 yellow fins on that day. Every-time we tried to leave for the long run up the coastline, the chant Flurry would be heard and all hell would break loose with tunas hitting the deck. We were slated to leave and make the run up to the coast by 4 pm....We finally flurried out at 7 p.m. Oh well, stick with the bird in the hand is what I’ve been told.
We pulled anchor around 8 p.m. and made the sloppy trip up the coast. Around 3 am the weather finally gave us a break and some of the wind and swells died down. We got to the fishing grounds where the yellowtails were really on the chew. They hit anything you dropped to he bottom and cranked up. The key was a fast wind and you were almost guaranteed a nice 20 plus pounder with every drop. We ended with somewheres around 237 Yellowtail in 2 hours!!!
I want to thank an excellent crew for turning a rough trip into a hilarious and very fishy experience. I only wish we could have found the elusive wahoo. (we did get one on the troll).
Thanks Kevin and Kenny for not killing me when i constantly got their names mixed up.
Also thanks for wiring up all those jigs for me that we didn’t get to use, and for the knot tying refresher course (side note Kevin is the grouchy one and kenny is the cute one. So says Kenny ).
Big homey hug to Aaron the master of the gaff.
Constant comedy was provided by Charles /Chuck the cook (chef) as he honed his gaffing techniques on the many fisheys coming over the rail. Chuck’s funny gaffing technique has inspired me to give him a more fitting monicker. Something that better describes his unique style and flair with the long bamboo. Henceforth I PsychoClown now give You Chuck a new clown name. You will henceforth be called STABBO the Clown. so if you need sushi grade tuna at the rail, make sure you call Stabbo!!
Art, I tip my hat to you sir. Art will get you on the fish and please, please always keep your line in front of you and keep winding!!!!! or you may get keel holed or walk the plank. Aye aye Captain Hook.
Thanks Cole for the quick gaffs. Cole was the energizer bunny. Gaff to the bow, gaff to the stern, and he just keeps going and going!
Jeremy was on loan from another boat and He assisted Stabbo/Chuck with the food. Talk about a tuff job shagging supplies from upper deck to the galley and prepping all the food through all the swells and crappy weather. Thanks Jeremy we all appreciate your efforts

After the yellowtail flurries. Someone put up some nice sunglasses to the crewmen that got a yellowtail on the deck first. All the crew started with yoyo’s at the same time. Art,Kevin,Kenny,Aaron,Cole, all lined up for the challenge. One, two, three, drop em. And the wrestlemania was on. After much pole jabbing, line slicing, hip checking and a few well placed elbows, Aaron was proclaimed winner. The next challenge was a nice cash pot put up by some of the passengers. Not to be out manuvered this time, Capt Art opened up a large can of whoop-ass and destroyed his fellow crew members to claim the pot. Aye, it’s good to be the Captain
We had Big Danny and Tyler from the sportfisher Pursuit fishing with us and If you ever get to fish with these nuts, Do so. You’ll have a whale of a time. Every time someone hooked up, you would here Danny and Tyler yell out GET SOME, GET SOME then everyone would start in. It was like Roller Derby chants. Funny as hell and u definitaly got pumped when u GOT SOME and if you didn’t, you wanted to Get SOME!!!
News flash “ Don’t be in Big Danny’s way when he yells Hot one coming down the rail” or you might end up receiving one of his trademark hip checks to send you flying out of the way. Hey it’s a bird, it’s a plane, Naaw, it’s just another rail sucker Danny’s sent into orbit. LoL
Patrick Gee and Joe and Tom Byer where putting on a fishing seminar everyday, all day. Seemed like Byer was always the first to hook up, and Patrick and Joe where soon to follow. Aside from watching these guys put up the numbers they were also a wealth of fishing information and were more than willing to share their secrets. Pretty cool. Patrick was using this sick setup of a Shimano Talica spooled with 40 lb and spectra on a Loomis 8 foot fast action rod that was just launching the bait out farther than any anybody’s with no effort. It was a sweet setup and it was workin so bitchin that he allowed Matt, my self and Eric some personal time with it at the rail. Can u say, Mom I want one.....NOW!!
Matt, I want to apologize for the accident your dad had, preventing him from making this trip. I guess my Clown mojo vodoo I sent your way zigzagged and caught your dad. Sorry Guy. It’s all Matt’s fault. Steve told him to stop harrassing the clown..Hurry up a heal up so we can do some fishin and clownin around
The Strictly fish guys were on fire too! Steve “Mainz” Paccione, Matt the Bonecrusher Gilchrist and Erik the Shogun Kinoshita were having there own Tuna / Dorado rodeo. Steve had a couple nice 30 pounder Dodos and 40 plus pound yellows. The same went for Matt the Bone Crusher. They already had half their tag limits before i got on one. They were clownin me all day. Tag teaming and triple teamin up on me. Shutting me out till I faked them to the inside and went left to the sidelines to pull in my first of the trip, a nice female dorado that came easily to the rail only to be greeted with the mangling gaff hook of the Master of Disaster “STABBO”. I was later told that when the dorado saw me in full clown gear at the rail she became confused and thought I was a big bull dorado callin to her. That’s why she came so easily to the boat. What a hoot! Hmmmm!! maybe.
Erik the Shogun. The same guy that got the largest 359 pounder last year pulled in a huge Dorado. 43 pounds. Only one problem. He and Tyler had been battling the same monster. They both had a hook in him. So they did what any gentleman would do. They had a dual at 30 paces with pearl handled Uzi’s. Naw,... they flipped for it, and Tyler came out on top. To add insult to injury, the next day the same situation happened again to Erik. Another huge Dodo and two hooks in it. Erik graciously told the other angler to keep it. What a nice guy!!! Come on Eric. Man up!! you could have at least challenged him to arm wrestling or rock paper scissors!! Hehehe. Oh well don’t feel bad for Eric. He got his limit of everything and several nice 50 pounders to boot.
All in all, Mother nature was not kind to us on this trip either going or leaving. The wind was up, swells were terrible and we got tossed around like a cheap frisbee at a Purina dog show. But the one thing that was constant was the Captains ability to get us on fish, the great uplifting spirit, knowledge and abilities of the crew and some of the best 5 star rated food provided by Stabbo/Chuck the chef. The food was great and plenty of it. Can u smeeeeell what the chefs got cookin!!!! Can’t wait till next year......Wahoo, Im coming for you. You can run, but you can’t hide..Mess with the Clown and u get the Horn....Honk, Honk.........P.S. for a more detailed post I'm sure "BentRod84" will be posting soon. By the way Eric the Shogun did it again...He took jackpot and second place with two 57 pound yellowfins..Im sure Matt will post pictures..

Great post. Gotta love the options that a fall 7 day has even when mother nature is not cooperating. Thanks for the report I'm headed out on a 6 day next Saturday. If we do nearly as well as you guys I will be stoked!

Great report! Thanks. Sounds like a fun trip in spite of Mother Nature's clowning around!

Naaah, no sculpin but Mainz did get some nice big sheephead that he gladly donated to Da Clown..
Hmmm I almost forgot to thank Sam at BajaFishGear for hooking me up with the new hollow spectra to floro connections. He served the floro to 80 lb hollow and hollow to 65 lb solid spectra. Worked like a charm. He served the connections so everything casted through like silk. Never exerienced any failures or break offs. He did it on all twelve of my reels. From 25 pound to 60 pound.
