Go on a good boat and if the Lupe is not happening than they will travel to Benitos/Cedros.

Flourocarbon / Shark suit ??? I had an Epic trip to the Lupe a few years back with Huge Yellowtail /Darado / and Yellowfin boarded. Did have some issues with the man in the Grey Suit ! There are several out there but one in particular he goes by the name BRUCE has got to be 20+ ft long and a stomach as deep as a well. He ate several 100 lb class fish back to back at the gilplate in fact got a few of my buddies. Here are a few pictures from my buddy that had his fish eaten he was talking about it at work and a guy he works with says oh yeah I dive out there ???? WTF and has pictures of that shark in action "HOLY SHIT " was what I had to say when I saw the Pics ! Anyway beware of the tax man and you will have an AWESOME time . Make sure to fish the yellowtail on dropperloop at night saw some pigs pulled out of that place !

I understand the tax collector is always at Lupe, and a few guys who have fished it told me they have had success putting the reel in freespool in an attempt to let the fish get away. I guess if the if you see him coming, this may work. I have also heard if he gets someone else's fish and you are on one that is about done to grind like crazy while he is chomping away in hopes you get the fish to gaf before he is ready for another one.
BTW I am fishing on the Intrepid.

i believe we are on the same 5.5 dayer on the pacific star. i haven't been to the lupe in 12-13 years. i have yet to witness the tax man. i guess we were to early to see him. there were some very large yellows caught though. i cant wait to get back down there in 3 months.

However, I would recommend that you take some Rods and Reels...Rodless. If you can't all the long range boats have good gear that you can use, it is a good idea that you call in advance for gear reservations. How did you get your moniker, sounds like there is a good story behind it, would like to hear it!
Thanks JK
I have seen a lot of posts asking about the benefits and drawbacks of 3 to 5 day long range trips during the months of July, August and September. I have a pretty good historic perspective on this length of trip and thought I would throw a few observations into the mix. As with all things, what we fish for, the techniques we use to fish for them with and the gear and fashion statements (Ha Ha) we fish in, have all changed or modified over the seasons. You really need to divide this length of trip into two categories, open ocean fishing and islands fishing when you are considering the length of trip you want to fish on.
Open Ocean. If you are looking for Albacore, Bluefin, Yellowtail under kelps and later in the season Yellowfin and Dorado the 3,4 and 5-day trips all offer excellent opportunities for a great trip. In reality during these months Southern California anglers can experience great fishing during one-day trips. On open ocean trips distance is a factor only due to the fact that the waters that are holding game fish are certain distances from the Point. One year Albacore will knock on the door at Point Loma and other years they will be 50 to 200 miles from San Diego. Longer trips, more time, hopefully, more fish.
Islands. If Isla Guadalupe, Islas Benitos and Isla de Cedros are in your game plan here is a little info regarding speed and distances to ponder. Depending on current, the length of the vessel and most importantly the man behind the throttles, most long range boats average around 10 knots over the water (it makes the math real easy as well). Approximate distances from San Diego to various points of importance:
N. End Guadalupe 216 nautical miles
S. End Guadalupe 235 nautical miles
The Gap Benitas 286 nautical miles
S. End Cedros 305 nautical miles
N. End Cedros 280 nautical miles
Cedros to Lupe 165 nautical miles
The Long Range Fleet generally can clear the Point between 12 Noon and 2 PM on average. As an example if you are headed to Guadalupe and get an early jump (10 to 11ish) you will be fishing Lupe some time early the next morning. Remember that a change in speed of one knot gains or loses you 24 miles in 24 hours (2 ½ hours of fishing time). On a three day trip Guadalupe is fishable for the day you arrive and until around nine or ten the next morning at the S. End, a little later at the North. Benitas and Cedros are unfishable on a three day trip and you better hit things just right on a four day if your intention is to fish the islands, as your 1st day and your last will more than likely be spent “looking” at open ocean, giving you one day at the Islands. The reason why I love a five-day trip is time. It allows you the luxury of reaching a location to find a down day due to the fact that conditions have changed for the worse. The fish are either off the feed, used their tails and swam away! The five-day trip allows you the time to recover and make a catch for the anglers onboard. What we dream of course is the 5 day trip where the stars align perfectly with moon, you leave San Diego with flat calm weather, load up on Albacore and Bluefin on your first day, fish Cedros and/or Benitas for 25 pound plus Yellowtail on the second day and finish off with a Jackpot Stop at Guadalupe, catching 35 to 70 pound Yellowfin and return home with continued flat calm weather and a ticker tape parade at the dock. There are a lot of different combinations between open ocean and islands fishing and destinations that can be hit when desperate measures are called for. This is just a general guide line, I am sure there will be an angler or maybe even an operator who says the Boat Bodacious goes 13 knots and can fish Alijos Rocks on a 4 day. Maybe so, but definitely not a realistic expectation.
During the months of July, August and September you really can’t go wrong when you choose a trip length. June can be an excellent month as well; as an operator in June I prefer 7 or 8 days. The more days I have, will allow me to reach some cool oceanic playgrounds. If you go earlier or later than July, August and September I would choose a longer trip, allowing you to fish on ground tackle at different locations. Whether you are out for one day, five to six days or even longer, have realistic expectations about where you can fish given time and distance. I hope this will be of some help to anglers that are making their way into the long range five and six day world. Oh one last word. The golden rule: have FUN whether you catch a bunch of fish or just or just a few. Oh a second last word. Do not be bashful about calling any of the long range operators and ask questions, as to a man they love to fish and almost all of us love to talk about it.
Thanks,
John Klein

If you are going on the Pacific Star, you are going with the best captain there is. Mike will find the fish, the crew is super, and Shane is the best cook you could ever find.
You picked well.
