Do I really need a 100lb setup?

Hey dudes I'd like some input from the smarter folks than me. My brother from another mother and I are planning on taking our leave blocks and jumping on our first 10 day here in October. My question is do you really need a 100lb rig? I've got all the way up to 60 and I'm getting a new 80 lb rig. I'm planning on taking a 20 30 40 60 and 80lb setups, plus the jig rods (yoyo, surface , buterfly). I've honestly never found the need to fish anything bigger than an 80 anywhere I've ever gone. I'm that guy who trolls 50. I just allways like to use lighter gear. He's the oposite, he'll fish 550 cord on a winch if he can. Obviously I know you need some heavy leaders sometimes but can you guys that have been doing this since before the ocean was full give me some advise, maybe there's something I don't know about? Thanks.

Depending on what 10 day boat your on most have gear you can use. And they could very well be better than you were hoping to buy.

the boat should have a list of what you need.

How bad would you feel as the boat pulls up on volkswagons jumping out of the water and all you have is a 60lb rig??!?!!?!

On a 10 day its about an 80% chance you will break a 100lb rig out and 25% chance of needing it (ie hook up).

Most boats to offer rentals and they are well worth the $$. PS was free (+ line) and Shogun was $50/week plus line. Ask your operator for a loaner (or 2) and forgo the $700-$1000 expense - if this is your first 10 day.

bueno suerte

Just bring an avet 30W and use wind on topshots. That way you can fish 80-100 by just changing the topshot. It's what I do.

Drop that 60 down to 50 (you can pull just as hard but will get bit much, much better) and ditch the 80 for a 100.

I would get one from the boat to be safe..We were fishing the lower banks in early October of 07 on the RP..It was run and gun on fish from 50 to 130 pounds,a 100 pound outfit worked well on the slide..

Remember the 05 Cowfest? We were down there but the skip took a couple laps around the boat and decided that most anglers were not equipped. Guys with 4/0s with 80 spectra as their heaviest rig (wahoo trolling/dropper rig). So…I got to hear and read about wfo cows and not even get to fish it. This was a very early fall trip….but you never know. Get at least one cow rig.
