Being scheduled for the Excel 7 day leaving July 10 I was interested in hearing from those who know what the ridge has to offer that time of year. Obviously if the rocks and Cedros continue to produce well it may not even be considered. Just wanted to know when the ridge gets with the program for grouper, dorado, wahoo etc. on a good year. Love that variety fishing when it is available. Have only done that on early fall trips.
On the 8 day trips I used to do on the Star in late June/early July we never went into the ridge. We fished the rocks and always got a handful of wahoo and great Yellow Fin Tuna fishing, but there was always fish offshore in the form of large bluefin and albies to fish on the way down and on the way back. Had some epic bluefin bites on 80 to 120 pound bluefin during that timeframe.
For years I did the Polaris Supreme 9 day that left late August/early September and we would venture into the ridge after beating up the wahoo at the rocks and have epic fishing in there as well. No boat pressure and 79 to 82 degree water meant good opportunity on unmolested wahoo.
Here is a pic taken during a 2 hour drift on big bluefin on the Star in early July. Hard to justify going looking on the ridge when this grade of bluefin wanted to play offshore...
