I love hooking an albie on the slide and then walking it like a puppy to the bow while pandemonium ensues at the stern! Then I usually stay up there... While everyone is stuck in the corner, I'm the guy you keep hearing at the pointy end yelling "GAFF"!

"That Guy" is in the eye of the beholder and can even mean "Those Guys".
On one trip not too many years ago we sign up for an 8 day'er aboard what was our normal boat (name withheld) that lines up and loads according to who's first to the dock. We are happy at the number 5 and 6 positions until a group of guys arrive and move in front of us placing us back another 12 places. Instead of getting pissed right at the start of the long trip we make small talk and start to get to know them all. One guy has a tackle box larger than an old navy footlocker and it takes two men to lift it into the cart. Certainly short of a full member I guess so he's over compensating a tad. This crate ended up on top of ours and screwed us the entire trip. It alomst went swimming one night by accident but the decky talked us out of it. All of the new arrivals are loaded with long sticks and talking crap about their own casting distances, kind of cool and a little annoying after a while.
Once on board we finally find a hole for the tackle box we both share UNDER the bottom shelf right on the deck. Big fun for us! Again no biggie because we are here to have a blast and catch tons of fish.
Now I like casting long rods as much as the next guy but I was taught to do it on the bow or the sides, these guys suddenly seem to own the boat and are slinging the iron in competition all around.
Several times during the trip we see several of the guys smoking dope on deck so we give them wide berth just letting them enjoy their trip and hoping they will return the favor.
My point in this is... Sure there are 'those guys" in just about any situation, but I think all can be one of those guys to others while thinking they are not.
I've fished many boats with one or two of "that guy's" aboard, it's just something to deal with but 12 of them on a boat at once and I will never pay to ride the same boat again.
Peace...

I'm prefishing last year's BTB 3B Fly Fishing Tournament at the North West Corner of La Jolla Kelp. I pull anchor to move to another spot. About 200 yards away is a fly fishing charter guide fishing on the anchor same as us. I recognize who it is from his posts and stories on another website. So I motor up (2 knots) and turn up his port side about a long cast away to say hello, introduce myself and ask if he's fishing the Tournament tomorrow. He's got a celebrity saltwater fly fishing author on board and this celebrity guy blows a gasket and starts yelling at me for trolling up his chum line......about a long cast away. Mind you, they're fishing bonito, barracuda on the fly, off the chum bucket and the dogs were thicker than flies, so my impact was minimal and again, they're fishing bonito! After he finishes his tirade, I look at the guy and said "sorry, I was just trying to introduce myself. Didn't realize that the bonito were that important to you." Then I left and went on with my pre-fishing.
Simply amazing. I'll never read anything by Mr. Celebrity. Based on what I saw, he really has nothing to offer to me other than a lesson on how not to act on the water.

When I was a kid I worked six pack charters out of Palm Beach Inlet, 6AM - 3PM trips.
I saw ''That Guy'' all the time. One particular trip we were trolling most of the day and picking away with hook ups on the troll. This is East Coast fishing on a 40' sportfisher
running two flat lines and the out riggers, with two fighting chairs in the cockpit. We would rotate the guys in the chairs every half hour or so. Port chair got the port flat line or port rigger and same for the starboard. So This one guy kept grabbing what ever rod that went off didn't matter if he was in the rotation or not. It didn't bother me to much we were catching fish.
But after awhile his buddies were getting a little pissed. And of course they were getting hammered. So the starboard rigger goes off and
this guy jumps out of the port chair and grabs the rod before starboard guy can get it. Well his bro / friend jumps up grabs the rod
with one hand and almost knocks this fuck out cold. with the other hand. Slammed his ass down in the chair and tells him he's done.
I almost pissed myself laughing so hard.

ok, so a couple years ago, i go on my 1st trip over 3 days on an unnamed boat chartered by an unnamed chartermaster. and no, i don't think i was that guy on that trip, but if i have been that guy ever, sorry for that.
so 1st day leaving p.l. a guy from pacific northwest strikes up a conversation. chatty fellow, seemed nice enough. apparently a big time salmon fisher, first time long range. ok...
so a couple days later we are fishing at this spot where there are some cool rocks sticking out of the water. so my new friend walks up to the rail at the stern next to me and casts a dine over my line. no big, pretty easy to untwist that except the guy reaches over my rod with one arm, and under it with the other, then yells at me to lift my rod. i then explained to him that i'd crack him in the jaw if i did that, so i reeled up and started back at the end of the line with a fresh bait.
a couple days later we are fishing at a big island and there are a lot of nice fish here to catch! at one point about a thousand or so larger of these fish suddenly charge the boat! f'ng amazing! everyone casts out and 24 rods are bent. all except for salmon guy who drops down a dine on a dropper loop. i don't think he got one or 5 at this stop like most everyone else. too bad, someone told him to cast out a bait on the surface, but he did it his way.
so on the way back we start trolling up the line and find some nice tuna that are biting very well. multiple hookup jigstops turning into nice bait stops. so this particular boat has a metal receptacle on top of one of the large bait tanks where the deckhand places some baits that can be scooped out with a dip net. so dropper loop guy and i grab the net @ the same time during a bait stop, so i let go and grab a bait with my bare hand while he starts screaming why did i drop the net, making quite a spectacle. he seemed pretty uptight for someone on the way home from an epic trip. and i mean epic, we caught fish i think every day except 1, lots of them, and nice grade. when we got back to the dock, most had large piles of fish, except for you know who. he didn't look real happy. poor guy.
oh, and Bob, sounds like a bummer trip. those long rodders must have been a real pain in the azz. sometimes i go up to the front of the boat to get away from those guys.

I was that guy only once that I can remember, two weeks ago on the "famous" Amigo gets the WSBass limits of 3@ for 11 anglers. Anyway the first fish hooked ran nuts all around the boat. I kept moving away with my dropper, moving more, finally the brute goes under the boat and goes once around my spectra 40#, I instantly IMMEDIATELY cut my line to free the thing, one minute later the man loses the fish and gives me the meanest thanks alot fucker look. I told him what I did but it didn't matter. I proceeded to lengthen all my top shots and had no more problems the rest of the day. I hated being the problem so I did something about it. By the way if (when warranted) people would let their fish run straight out for a bit to let em tire, you have an easier time getting them straight in instead of running amok all over everyone.

I was on one cow trip where every single bait came back tangled up in the same group. Every single one. It was so bad everyone started laughing. What else could you do? 20+ lines with 100-150lb leaders all tangled up. Looked like a gill net. Somehow the mates unwound them all.
I would like to say that if you are using macks, it is hard to tell when he starts coming back to you, especially on heavy gear. I've watched them come right back to the boat and it feels just like he is going away.
One point of note, how to avoid "that guy" or the crowd. Either go to the bow or just belly hook your baits. Guaranteed to keep your bait away from the others plus you only reel back a hook, which never tangles, no matter how many lines crossed your.

Great Thread.
One 4 day trip to Lupe on the hook. This That Guy would cast out and then when the boat swung a bit. Would swear he was getting bit and then would wind in 10+ other anglers at time. Was funny a few times. But after a few days of this was getting old.
One thing though he was a really nice guy so couldn't hate him so much. We just learned to let our lines out once he was caught in the tangle. |

i remember a while back on a 2 day, we stopped on a paddy that gave us a good wfo yellowtail bite for about 20 minutes. anyways, 'that guy' hooked into the jackpot yellow(was around 30#) up on the bow and didn't move at all. he pretty much spectra-sliced everyone on the side of the boat he was on, and he didnt start moving until the skipper came out of the wheel house and called him out.
funny thing was about 10 minutes into the battle, the guy is fishing an accurate 665w 2 speed, he kept complaining 'omg this is tough, im tired! i don't know if i can do this!' and some how he didnt know that the reel he just dumped about 700 dollars on was a 2 speed. i would have explained it to him that his reel was a 2 speed and that he could shift into lower gear, but i was enjoying watching the yellow kick his ass. XD
