Absolutely a true statement...

My input into the thread was for amusement. Just like any other 'thing' where you deal with other people there will always be people that don't get along for whatever reason. Asshole drivers, loud people in theatre, etc...

If one can identify that guy then one can avoid him and have a great trip in spite of his 'thatguyness'.

And therein lies the key.

Also, it begs the "other" rule of Thatguyness: IF you look around, and you can't locate THAT guy, then he just may be you.

I fished next to that guy all day one time:

I got to the landing (cap dicks in murrel inlet SC) at 5:15 to line up for a first come first serve 6 am loading. As usual i brought all my own gear and a box of crispy cremes for the crew (it helps, really). so i set my gear down on the left side of the boarding ladder as the crew was loading ice and bait from a cart on the right. I take a seat at the nearby bench and eat my breakfast. about 20 minutes laterthe ticket office opens and out comes a guy from NC and his twwo boys. he walks over to my gaer and tells his boys, this stuff is ONT IN LINE we are first in line!

the crew noticed this and when it was time to load one mate was talking to this guy while the other made sure i got on first and got my spot.

SO, where does NC go?? right next to me.

it was all downhill from there, he had his first beer as soon as we cleared the 3 mile limit, the crew gave him a "busted rod" and won't fix it, these hooks are dull, i can't get a bite on this crappy squid, yada, yada, yada....

i even offered him my spare rod and some baitfish to shut him up but he refused.

all the while i was absolutely killing the fish and LMAO! this dud finally caught one little b-liner just before the captain called lines in for the day. I had a big ass stringer of snapper, grouper and amberjack and he had 1 two pound fish.

it was not so bad, he brought me great luck!

cheers
jerry

I was on a 2.5 day Albacore trip about 2 years ago. While we are getting ready to depart the captain and the crew are going over where we will be fishing and what we will be catching etc. etc. Out of nowhere this guy in a bright green Hawaiian shirt and big straw hat shouts out "will we be doing any bottom fishing?" This is a TUNA fishing trip and not to mention the guy is swaying back and forth and we haven't even left the harbor yet!!! Ok, I knew he was going to be "THAT GUY." Anyway, we get into our fist day of fishing and the guy is drunk by 10am and doesn't know a sardine from an anchovie. We end up in a wide open bite and he is constantly walking back to the bait tank and leaving his rod at the rail. While he was soaking his bait he wouldn't keep his line in front of him and would constantly get tangled. Eventually, I said F*** it and when he walked back to the bait tank and left his rod I would cut his line above the hook. It took him about 15 min to tie on another hook that everyone was able to catch a few fish without "THAT GUY" F'n everything up. He was so drunk he couldn't even tie on his hook properly. Also, he wore that damn Green Hawaiian shirt the whole trip so we named "THAT GUY" the GREEN MACHINE. End of story!!!

Years ago I was on a 5 day out of Ensenada. I was a fill in on a charter that was made up of law enforcement officers. Most of them were "that guy". They had the idea of the hot stern corner burned in their head and would not follow their bait or even a hooked fish up the rail. They would stand in the back of the boat and fight a fish that was half way to the bow.

After casting over their head and then following my bait a few times, I started making loud comments about following their bait and they started talking back to me. They were LEOs and not used to taking advice from some "punk".

After one saw off caused by a guy in the stern that should have been way up the rail, I told the guy that orgainized the fiasco what I thought. He agreed with me and had a little talk with everybody after dinner. The rest of the trip went much better and they got the hang of it for the most part and we caught quite a few Yellow Fin Tuna. They even invited me to share their tequila with them on the last night.

I usually give them or "those guys" the tequila first so they are easier to navigate.

You know...."trample the weak and hurdle the dead".

Besides, for the most part I fish the "office" anyway and most of "those guys" like the square end of the boat.

Great Thread Steve....see what you started

Well there was one guy "that guy" that wouldn't fallow his bait he would just stay in his spot in the stern. So when my grandpa hooked up on the first dodo on the boat the guy wouldn't get out of the way. He kept saying go around when my gramps needed to go under. There was no way I was gunna have my gramps loose this dodo (He hadn't gotten a chance to get on a two day that year for health reasons and he kept talking about how he wanted a dodo.) So long story short I pulled out my dykes and cut the guys line and slightly checked him out of the way so my grandpa could get by.
We got the fish and it was a great trip besides "that guy"
.. what did that guy say after??

I've been on only one five day and i loved it. but there was this couple that wanted to try it from the midwest and also an older lady that was on the trip it was still a blast ( i'm new so i know i made mistakes but i tried ) they would stand at the front of the boat let there bait soak and let all there line out. Every time you came in they would be in your line all ratted up. Hated it with a passion but it was such a great trip it didnt matter. but on a another short trip last year for Blue Fin Tuna i was the boney king and finaly got my fish almost had it to color then shit happend finally cut the lines and started bringing it back in and the damn dogs got it laughing about a 100 yards before coming up. ( ready to kick ass ) but thats fishing i still had a great time boneys and all. Much better than work

"That Guy" can be a vacation wrecker if you let him. I almost let that "that guy" get me like that. Instead I just avoided him.

For "That Guy" it's not a lack of skill or commitment, it's a lack of common courtesy, an inablility to listen or think of anyone else other than himself, and a complete lack of manners.
