True story, unfortunately. Looking back, its funny but that little story brings a smile to my face.

Same guy trolled at night with his spinning reel from Clarion to the Cape. It really had no idea what he signed up for.

Hell, I think I may have been "that guy" myself. Went on a trip to Clemente on one of the finer boats and had a bit too much to drink (no kidding!) Seas were very rough. Boat ended up going one way, me the other, then we both met in the middle. My face hit the deck full and sandpapered me good. Next morning I hear a couple of guys say, man did you see that guys face??? Went to the head, looked in the mirror and OMG, WTF, face was covered in blood. Looked worse than it was. Very humbling. Bought a private boat and quit drinking so much...

No names or name of boat can be mentioned, but this is a true story.

On a long range boat a few years back one of the customers ended up spending the whole trip in his bunk. Said customer would come out to eat once a day at max, then back in. Toward end of trip bad smell starts coming from the guys room. Deckhands open the room to find the guy covered in shit. Captain gets the whole crew up in the middle of the night to clean the guy and his room up. He was not invited back.

Heroin is a bad drug kids.

Most of you guys have forgotten as much as I know about fishing. I have been on two 5 day trips with the same group of guys. As a whole, this group is as good as I could hope for. But there is that "one guy". This is going to sound like I am bashing on older anglers. Far from it.

This group has a number of elder anglers and I am amazed at what they can do, especially Bean Sokioka at 89, now I guess 90. At 54, I am one of the young ones on this trip. My problem wasn't with Beans who is a whale of a fisherman and human. It was another guy who in appearance is far older than I think he really is. He has trouble walking without holding on to something. Please don't get me wrong, I am all for helping out older guys, but this guy is a piece of work.

When we are loading the carts, I have found my gear loaded with his both years. He has more gear than I would think any two guys would need for a 15 day trip, let alone a mid July 5 day trip. Of course, he can't help push the cart and somehow his gear, all three boxes, end up in prime spots with one being where he can sit while working on his gear. He leans his rods up against the bait tank and will immediately say he was in line but had to get out for some lame reason. Fish are busting everywhere and this guy takes forever to hook up a sardine. He promptly then heads to his corner, makes a 2 foot cast and before you know it his line is under the boat tangling up everyone. Physically, he can bearly move so when you are shuffling down the deck with a fish on, he isn't about to move. The deck hands have started hollering at him because otherwise, he is clueless about what is going on around him.

Guys on this trip will know who I am talking about. No one would ever want to bunk with this guy. I think he is wealthy and expects folks to cater to his needs. I don't pay money to help guys like this out. Again, please do not see this as me bashing older guys. Beans is my hero. He is one of the first on the deck in the morning and one of the last off in the evening.

At the end of the trip, he expects you to push his gear out to his truck and help him load the tons of gear.

Loved it when Steve K and I are both on LARGE tuna and he is coming across the stern and I am in the corner....his fish is running and mine is doing death circles......I see him coming and he sees me and we do the two step and just like that we are both clear and out of danger and then out of nowhere two people throw a sardine out right between us. Steve and myself both glanced at each other and before we could say anything the charter masters both made their opinion heard.......... " give these guys a chance, they have been on these fish for awhile and there is plenty of rail on this boat ". Needless to say they vacated the area.

No harm , No foul and we all went about our business.

Sometimes the excitment gets the better of common sense

Meh.

I've fished with 'that guy' on 1 day private boat runs offshore, 1-2 day open party and charter trips and 1/2-3/4 day local boats. "That guy' is everywhere.

Frankly, after almost a decade of fishing locally offshore, I'm over catching 15-20 albacore and 10-15# yellows on paddies. I'd much rather have a shot at some bigger fish.

I'd rather do a couple of 5+ day trips over the season and a handful of PB day trips than fish every weekend on a PB all season catching small fish.

[QUOTE=Outthouse;1383563]

Some guys have a hard time walking on land let alone a shifting, moving vessel.
After a three and half day boat ride to Hurricane we dropped the anchor in flat clam conditions, an older gentleman who was very out of shape stood up from the RRIII outside bench seat, I watched as his leg buckled and snapped and rushed to catch him.
I accessed the situation, compound fracture.
Ran up to the wheel house, told Ande, "We got to pull it (anchor)" told him the situation, with out hesitation he made the move to head to the cape, three days.
Obviously this was no ones fault, shit like this just happens. Each angler bought a ticket, but on the way to Cabo while I was holding a bottle to this older angler penis so he could pee, he said maybe he is too old to do such a long trip.
We dropped him in Cabo and made sure he was in good hands and off for the States. The we went to Cleofis (the JT bank) and loaded up, (this is back when JT was in high school playing ice hockey though, he did not have time to invent Cleofis yet, we just stumbled upuon it)

Long range trips are epic fishing, more often than not the captain and crew can regulate the on goings of the deck, experiences are generally a success. Don't let this thread discourage you, for every lame story their are 50 great stories, Long ranges trips offer the most valuable thing for an angler, time on the water.
