| Tuna Poppers?
Anyone give any thought to these Gulf/east coast style poppers? (OTI,Yozuri etc) I wonder how they might work out here in place of throwing jigs?

I use them all the time as well as make my own, I have some posted up in the homemade lures forum. They work great in an open bite for Yellow Fin Tuna and Dorado. Yozuri is one of the styles I made a mold of with some changes, also the Williamson's work well. OTI is ok as well but a bit too big IMO for local stuff thats more of a PV, East cape lure.

What kind of rod / reel outfit do you use for "poopers" ?? A typical surface iron jig stick ??? 90J / P533 combo ?? Thanks KML

Depends on what you want to accomplish, and how good you can do with a particular rod, I only use 2 set ups Either a Shimano Spin Cast reel (Stradic,Saragosa, ect) lined with 65lb spectra and about 20' of Fluoro and use a Chugger or one of many that I have made. If you dont feel like using the spincast which in my opinion is the best way to throw poppers you can go ahead and use something like my back up set up, a 700 calstar or 800 calstar with a 400TE DC cast is best or standard even a 300TE loaded with 65 lb spectra and 20' of Flouro and do the same only thing is because its a conventional its a bit different in its action and using the set up requires a bit more skill and tact.

Do you gents swap out the trebles, on say a Yozuri 3.5 oz popper, and replace them with Siwash hooks?
Does this greatly effect the balance of the lure?
I am taking a few poppers on a 10 day, just for some fun up in the bow when I feel like mixing it up. Never too keen on trebles, single hooks make things easier.

Poppers work great on Yellow Fin Tuna when the bite is going. Seeing a big fish come out of the water and hit your lure is awesome. I haven't experienced using poppers to get a bite going though. Maybe just need more practice. I had decent luck with topwater stickbaits too. Worked as well or better than bait during a slow pick bite. I''l be trying a lot more of that on my upcoming 11 day.

Never too keen on trebles, single hooks make things easier. | Personally I'm all over the trebles and replace the stock ones with 3/0-4/0 Owner st-66's. If the fish are really ginormous (meaning 100lb+) I'll hang Owner Jobu single hooks (especially on the tail).
All split rings are replaced with Owner #9-10 depending on the lure size.
ps: be sure to throw a few Roberts Ranger skip jigs in the box too. they are cheap but tough and fished with a high stick and retrieved fast it's fun to see the fish blow up on them.
