what do you guys think about the perfection loop. what lb. test would be the heaviest you would tie this knot with ? how strong is it ? i normaly use the san diego but i thought it might work as a poor mans ringed hook.

I only use the perfection for 1 situation.
100# Ande leader for casting macks to Striped Marlin.
Works great for me with about 12-15#'s of drag (40-50# mainline)
Its an alright knot. Give it a try, my friend has tied it for tuna with 30#

I use the perfection loop for faux ringed hooks all the time. Quick, easy, adjustable, strong. Any test, has not failed me.

Long range is way different than offshore SD. I'd do as the romans if I were going on their boats...
that said:
I used perfection loop on 20 - 30 line with 1/0-2/0 owner mutu circles and dines on the local dodo, Yellowtail, albie, yellow fine bluefin - in liue of ringed. Worked great! (was experimenting- this is light line) Lost a trophy dod on the circle when i tried to set a hook- and it got spit! Just point pole at fish w/ circle- no set- it set's itself -right in corner of mouth.
I'd say it's a great knot for heavy line- 80 lb no prob- 150lb even...would not think a prob. But yes SD knot on all feathers etc-
Been using it on my feathers too- on the swivel end
Great article. I use the rapala knot because I can't tie a perfection w/ a cd-18 and i don't want to crimp. Some day (sooner than later- I hope) I will nail a Blue Fin Tuna or Bigeye on one. Will be pissed if the rapala knot does not hold!

this may be heresy but I caught a lot of nice tuna last summer at Alijos including 3 from 80-105# using uni knots that were not cinched all the way down for the ringed-hook effect
I did this as an experiment, fishing was so good I didn't feel like I would lose out if I lost a fish to a bad knot and I was cutting off so many fish I didn't want to use expensive hooks - however, I never had any failures tying these in 40-80# line
I don't think I would do this as a regular practice though, only with really good fishin like we had there

At Bruce Smith's (Shogun) suggestion, I tried the PL on 130 floro to non-ringed hook & it worked great - just like he said: good abrasion resistance, easy to adjust loop size (for me, only fairly easy) & a very easy knot to master. Landed YF to 170# using PL at HB. Bruce did not recommend PL on 100# in amonst these size & larger fish - for 100 he wanted a double knot (trilene, D-SD, D-Uni, Miller, Irwin, etc.). I've finally learned to listen better to the experts. Anyway, it worked for me. Good luck!
