Equipment and Setup Advice for 7-day in June

I have some questions if you can help for a June 7-day. I was going through my gear and need to consolidate or clean-up:

1) I have Seaguar Fluorocaron line, 20-60 lb. test that have never been used. I believe it is from a few years ago (2006). It was kept in the spool and not exposed to any light. You think it is still good?

2) Circle or J-Hooks? Ringed hooks? Sizes? for the 7-day. I have a crapload of 94150 hooks. Are these still being used a lot for flyline or are people going to the owners and gamakatsu's?

3) Megabaits in 4.5 oz. sizes. Are these something still effective or are Salas and Tady's the way to go?

4) Storm Megabaits. These are the ones that look like a sardine or chovie or mackerel. Are these any good? Is the hook too thin for this kind of fishing?

5) Bringing bass gear like a 20-30 lb outfit I use for throwing huge swimbaits. I can probably do 30 lb. spectra on a Abu Record CN60 and get 200+ yards OR I can do a Pro Gear CS500 on a Lamiglas Swimbait Special (15-30lb). What would I be able to use this as? My light 30 lb. for flyline, a slide setup with a swimbait?

6) Why not use a 7Strand trolling lures like a 5" Mexican Flag 2.5 oz (no feathers) and put a 7691 J-Hook with a flasher hanging off of it and use this as a wahoo bomb?

7) Tady's and Salas: Should I swap out the trebles with J-hooks? What size, brand, and how? I have some open eye'd stingers but I a afraid of the eye's opening up after crimping when fighting a bigger fish.

Thanks everyone.

Thumbs up I'll take a shot...

1) the flouro is probably still good. Personally I would start the trip with new flouro and take the old stuff just in case.
2)I am a big believer in ringed hooks. I used to use Eagle Claw WM1080G in 2/0 and 3/0...when Owner started making ringed gorilla hooks, well, I switched over. Make sure though that once the fish is on the deck YOU will have to get your designer hook back, the deckhands in a hot bite will not get it back for you. Circle hooks/ J-hooks, it's all in your style of fishing. I know how to set a hook and I like to fish that way so I use J hooks. For flylining albacore I have begun using the Ringed Flyliner hook. It's all personal preference
3) The Megabaits still work well as a cast and retrieve type lure and on the slide...on the slide they outfish everything. There was one year though when Big Hammer tuna sliders outfished the Megabaits but over time, the Megabait won out. I have landed tuna up to 75#'s on Megabaits without any problems from the hooks. Just be wary of pulling too hard or you will bend the hook.
4) Not familiar with Storm Megabaits...sorry
5) Depending on how fishing is going, in the past we have spent an afternoon at Chester's or Punta Eugenia fishing Yellows and calico bass for a break or in some cases to give the tuna a break. I will drop down to as low as a 25# outfit for yellows and I have an even lighter set-up in case we fish the bass. A 30# is what I use for my albie live bait set-up...the reason for this is because I have hooked into bluefin while dropping baits back on the slide for albacore and I like the little extra security that comes with 30# test. Again it's all in personal preference.
6) In the 15 years I did this trip at this same time you are going, we caught wahoo 3 times and it was only one per trip. Don't hold your breath for wahoo. Zukers, 7Strand, in mex flag, mean joe green, purple/ black ( one friend of mine who does my trip swears by Pink) are all good on the troll, also from Burns Saltwater outfitters are the Six-shooter heads with the above skirt colors work well too. I rig mine with 7982HS 7/0 stnls double hooks, this my personal preference for rigging.
7) Tadys and Salas with the trebles are fine...no need to switch out hooks. Only one time did I ever have a Tady treble bend on me was one year I hooked a 60# Yellow Fin Tuna in the tail...me pulling hard and him pulling the opposite way bent the hook...I did land the fish though!
Tightlines,
mike

While wahoo are possible some years in June at the stones, this year appears to be of the cooler water variety. Most likely most of your time will be spent at Benitos, Cedros, with albacore and other offshore going to and from. Alijos is always a possibility too with some good school size tuna and big yellows at the bank. Your flouro should be fine, j-hooks too. I would carry a few gorillas for the dropper loop.
Trebles on your jigs are fine as stated above. Bluefin and albies were very line shy at times early in the season and when surrounded by seiners. 20-25# flouro was a must to get bit. I'd have fresh spools in the lower tests. 7x Salas light in assorted colors
for surface, 6x & 6x jr in assorted colors and the irons covered. You sound like you have the rest well covered. Yellowtail fishing this time of year can be phenominal at
the islands!

Not the right time of the year for the rocks. Cedros for yellow and a possible WSB bite, Bonitas for more yellows and off-shore for Tuna and Dorado. Thats pretty much the options for a seven day that time of year. Make sure to bring a bait catcher rig to your set ups.

If you don't have one, make sure to bring a 9 foot, 40-50 pound jigstick, along with a handful of Salas Super 7X's. You won't be disappointed if you guys head to Cedros/Benitos.

I have to disaagree with that statement. This will be my fifth 8 day in june this year, and I have seen Alijos full of Yellow Fin Tuna in June. Have extra 40# outfits, as that is most used. Have fun!

In my opinion, that old fluro you have might be a little brittle.....I think over time that stuff gets a little stiff, like one of the earlier BD'ers said, get some new fluro. As far as a light live bait setup I would bring at least one 20-25lb setup just in case the name of the game is albacore and they are picky. other than that you sound like your covered. here is what i bring on my trips between 5-10 days.

1. 20-25lb live bait
2. 30lb live bait
3. two 40lb live bait setups.......having one of these a two speed is nice
4. 50lb live bait / yo yo
5. 60-80lb trolling/dropper loop setup.
6. 9'-10' jigstick with a lightweight reel for throwin iron.....40lb minimum, 50lb is better for anything you hook south of Isla San Martin.
I actually bring a few more setups with me but you will definately have your bases covered with a quiver similar to this.

I disagree completely. I've seen 100+ pounders blowing up in the chum line at Alijos in June. I watched Guero67's uncle Mike catch a 105# Yellow Fin Tuna at Alijos as well in June. I have personally caught Wahoo at Alijos in June and watched my bros on the same 8 day tear the Wahoo up on the Burns Bombs as well in June at Alijos. Alijos can be great fishing in June. Oh and BTW, it's Isla Benitos not Bonitas. It's part of the grouping of three islands that are generally off the hook for surface action in June, Isla Benitos, Cedros, and Natividad, just to let you know.

700H should be good... The extra heavy is probably too much stick for that size line... Don't know what a mh is...

Edit...

Ahhh looks like the mh is perfect but I still might go with the H... Didn't originally see the mh in calstars catalog but found it online...

wow! incredible advice everyone. here is my tentative rod/reel setups:

(All have spectra backing)

20-25 lb - 700L custom Calstar w/corkgrip and a pro gear cs500
30 lb - 700ML Calstar w/ Pro Gear Albacore Special 282
40 lb - 700M Calstar w/ Pro Gear Albacore Special 540
50 lb - 700H Calstar w/ Pro Gear Albacore Special 542
60 lb - 765ML Aftco Rollers w/ Daiwa SLD30 II-Speed

I have a Pro Gear CS500 for a 30 lb. backup. Is this okay? I normally use 20 or 25 on reel.
Could I use a TLD15 for a 40 lb. backup?

I think I'm going to use the boat rods for anything 80+. If I decide to do a 10+ day trip then I'll consider getting heavier tackle and maybe even 2-speeds for the lighter line (30-50 lb setups).

Looks good to me.. I like to bring two 30 and 40 setups this time of year...

As far as bigger gear, I only bring my 30/2 and one roller rod (with 80 or 100) pretty much for trolling... Anything bigger stays at home until the fall...
