My fishing bud Bill and I caught the Bright and Morning Star to Lupe on the 14th. They have a 2 for 1 special in the begining and end of the season. We've been cathcing this boat for a few years, twice/three times a year.
We arrived at Lupe Monday morning and found green water at Pilot rock accompanied by three shark boats. We quickly moved to several spots along the south finally setting up on tuna alley. We had stren rotations with 10 people on her 20ft ass for 30 minutes a shot.
The first rotation produced a bite which was lost.
The second rotation produced an weird situation where I thought I was reeling back in a few tangled birds that on top of the water.
Then the line got heavy like a big sack. Then there was a big swirl near the end of the line - the deck hand and i just looked at each
other. Put it into low gear because it was really heavy. Got it to the boat. Tuna! It sees the boat and takes off.
58# Yellow Fin Tuna
We believe the tuna just swam back to the boat. I had so much line out that I never felt the strike. The bird disppearance must have been a
shark.
The fishing was pretty slow. Out of the 28 anglers, I'd say 20 were hard core rock cod fisherman that had converted over to ganions and catching white fish. Several hooks were then lost to "spot" the local GWS, including my friend Bill's massive fish that was estimated 80-90#s. Bill them recovered from his lost to steal the first jackpot from me with this Yellow Fin Tuna.
62# Yellow Fin Tuna
I put the a nice lupe Yellowtail on board:
First day count was 2yft, 2 Yellowtail. Countless bottom fish.
Second day we hit the alley again for a 40# Yellow Fin Tuna. Then moved to the weather side of the island for nada. We worked our way back to the alley after stopping at the "world record Yellowtail" spot only for a few minutes. We got backto Tuna Alley where I got my 2nd Yellow Fin Tuna:
64# Yellow Fin Tuna
The guy standing behind me in the blue shirt would kill two Yellow Fin Tuna @ 76# and 79# on 30# gear. Needless to say he was wrecked.
this is his 79#:
Another jackpot ripped from my hands.
The final Lupe' count was 9YFT and 3YT. Four fish lost to the shark.
The captain decided to leave. He got reports of limits of Yellowtail in San Marteen. We spent the next two days working or ass off for 100yt averaging 9#’s in San Marteen.
The wfo Yellowtail bite never materialized, a handful of anglers accounted for most of the Yellowtail, while the rest of the boat fished ling. They killed about 300 ling cod to the delight of the fillet bill. I did not fish ling cod.
I would have preferred to stay at the island as would have about 5 other anglers. I would rather be skunked at Lupe then catch rat Yellowtail on the yoyo. I don't like bottom fishing unless that is what we set out to do in the first place. Bill and I agree that after 8 years of solid San Diego fishing, we have to upgrade our boat selection. I love the BMS, but I can not afford to spend my time rock fishing when I expect to fish tuna. I'm having a 26ft Amato super panga being built now and it will be powered by a 150 Yamaha 4 stroke.
This will eliminate all of my 1,2,5 day trips because of $$$. I will hopefully be able to squeak out a 10 day ridge trip every other year where I can almost count on 6 days of off shore fishing.
