Wide reels have their place but I prefer narow reels.

Are you ready for the 15 day trip?

I recommend the CalStar GF 7465XH for a heavy rig. I have used the others mentioned and the XH provides more lifting power than the 760H.

Wow, this is a great forum. I never expected to receive so much info from a single post. As you guys probably surmised, I'm a newbie with NO 10dayer experience so I'm all ears. I intend to try 10dayer next year. Anyway, whats rail wrap and is Cal (not the school) the recommended place for upgrading drags? btw, I tried testing with #35 drag and it is a bear for me to handle. although I realize the fish-to-rail time would be more, I think I prefer a setup with a bit less drag and a bit more giving rod so maybe a glass rod would be a better choice. Anyway, thanks to all for your help.

mas,
I'm in no way a large person but I'm strong enough to pull 35lb plus of drag, work out and get to where you can do it. If your reel is getting 35lb at strike I wouldn't worry about a drag upgrade but how is the freespool?

Cal's is not the only place to go for quality reel work but he has been good to me and he will continue to get my buisness. I don't know where he's located but I've nothing but good about the work Larry Cofe does.

I have two 760H full roller rods. One has Avet 30W w/130 JBH and the other is Avet 50SDS with 130 JBH. Both are awesome when pulling on big Yellow Fin Tuna. It's easy to handle and won't beat you up. I've had both rods loaded and twisted at the rail and it performed flawlessly. I have my Accurate 50 W on a Seeker 6463XXXX for the kite. The reel is loaded with 700 yards of 200 JBH. This is a brute of a rod.

I made a GF765H tuna rod for a customer a while back. US flag wrap if ya see it around. Aftco rollers. It's killed a bunch of big yellowfin. A lot of nice blanks mentioned, but the 765H is a killer..

what do you guys think about the aftco wind on rollers that come on the 6463's? because i haven't seen a factory wrapped calstar with those guides. I ask because I am about to pull the trigger on the 765H.

hey Jim,
i think.......it's common knowledge that calstar rods have caught more 200 lb fish than any other rod, the 760H being the biggest culprit.
Still, i had the Calstars and went back to Seeker.
i liked the old sabre rods and being old, the Seekers are a little more forgiving on my elder statesman bones. Seeker were the recipients of the old sabre tooling machines, hence, i regard them as more of a true sabre rod juiced up with today's materials. i have the black steel, and, hear the super seekers are not bad
Calstar Rods - History
The San Diego Sportfishing Council reported recently that for tuna 200 pounds or more 109 fish were taken on Calstar rods, 38 on all other manufacturer's products combined (the majority of the minority were Seeker rods). This pattern has held for the past few years, with Calstar being preferred for big fish on long range style trips. Calstar is well regarded, for good reason.

No doubt that the Calstar rod has been in the hands of many long rangers but.....................the stats you used are from the 2003/2004 season and the mention of the 760H was nowhere to be found. I too like the Seekers because they seem to be a bit more forgiving.

I still have some Calstars....a 760XH that is a real stump puller and a 660XXH that I plan on wrapping.

It is kind of like a pistol

what is the real difference between a 44 and a 357......they both are going to get the job done and the end result is the same.........if you know what I mean

id go custom. 7465H or 746XH with silicon carbides if your fishing with it at the rail and rollers if its going to be a kite rig.
