If I'm on a 10+ day trip, there better be 100# plus fish or it will be a disappointment. At least some 80lbers. No point going on long trips to catch schoolie tuna when you can catch all schoolie tuna you want right now in 1 day range (I mean 3 hour range). Some of these counts are ridiculous nowadays.

lower bank in the fall, rail fishing with 200 spectra and 130 topshot reminded me of rock codding in deep water. next trip i am going to make sure i attach my rail plate and pretend it just a mean cow cod. not a big angling feat by any means

Catch fish

Throw a vote for a good catch over cow. Going out on first 10 day in a couple weeks, and would like to get a Wahoo and a Grouper. Just dont have the mad cow disease... Yet!!

Just curious; do you have this conversation with the captain before you book the trip or on the first travel day?

If I drop $4k on a trip (which is the bare minimum with other costs), I don't want to go catch a bunch of 30lb tuna. I think that is understood or I would just go on a shorter trip. Any captain that doesn't understand that too is losing customers, guaranteed. Captains have to know their markets as well as the fishing. Unless of course he owns his own boat...

Now, if there are only schoolie tunas , well, let's have a little fun with that, but it will be a disappointment.

I was on a ten day trip last year and all we cuaght were schoolie tuna and a handful of of Hoo. I have to admit the trip was a bust. Evryone had a good time on the boat, but at the same time it wasn't the trip that anyone had hoped for either. I had a whole year since then of thinking I could have taken the wife to Panama for a week fishing insted. Not that it was the boats fualt or anyone else's. some trips are just dont get the fish. you do need to catch some big fish on a ten day trip or whats the point in all the travel.

cowtown is the best and worst thing to happen to the 10 day menu. My 1st 10 day in 1976 was the best fishing trip i have ever been on for that length of time and never saw a tuna over 50lbs on that trip, but did see a 112lb Wahoo. If the cows on the lower banks prove to be fickle or better yet cyclical will it be the end to the 10 day trip?

I want to catch a 200lb tuna but am not willing to spend 10-14 days on a boat to do so. My plan is to go to PV in the fall charter boats by day than at night go to a comfy hotel room and curl up with my wife instead of 25 other stinky guys in cabins. Wake up and do it again the next day! What time of year do the cows come out and play best in PV?

i think we all try to pick our spots from just going fishing on the half day boat to going cow fishing. but in the end it all comes down to an opportunity to go fishing and play with all of our toys. when i go with the idea that i am going to catch something i set my self up to be disapointed. if i do decide to go cow fishing i prepare myself mentally to be ready mentally and physically to be in the game when it is happening and to have my gear ready if and when i get my shot. cow fishing is the thrill of the hunt, and i like to go hunting. i also like to go fishing, and the 1/2 day boat is all about catching.goo
