Heck,

Most of you folks probably do not remember the old days when a 9 or 10 day trip went to Mag Bay for Cow............. Yellowtail. Of course, we would also hit up the Lupe for Giant Blue Fin (Now those were cows) and Yellowfin. Yup, we would go to the Bay for average 40+ pound yellowtail. We did not know from the Cow Tuna at Mag Bay. Jig Masters, 4/0, 6/0,9/0 and 12/0 Penn reels and me with much smaller reels and lighter line including a spinner or two (Mitchell brand)..... We Loved the mixed bag. Today I prefer the bigguns but a 10 day is one I would have to think about as far as going to the Bank. Now 11 days, that I would vote for. Some things change and some things don't.

I think I'm the only person in the world who has absolutaly no desire to go catch a cow on a long range.

Actually Chris,

You are not alone,

I cannot tell you how many captains, during the Mag Bay Cow bite of 2005, told me many passengers were just plain done with the big fish in one or two days and wanted nothing more than to fish 50 pound or less fish and obtain a grab bag of variety. Cows are not for everyone but for those of us who dig them they beat the heck out of everything else.

Why cant the original date of the thread be listed in the thread box along with the last post? I wouldn't have to bother with old threads and recent posts to them.

So what you have something better to do then look at old threads? When its slow fishing the majority of us go back in time an look at old posts, its like getting the blood flowing again. I would think you have other things to bitch about then this, but I could be wrong with a man that can't waste time.

Now to the ?? its a crap shoot. long boat ride granted. If your going to kill fish for the freezer, well your pissing away $3500.00 (total) for nothing. You could buy all the fish for a hell of a lot less. Your going to have fun, relax, an be with buddys. Some of us are taking a 12 day on the Interpid in jan an its a cow trip. Nothing less nothing more. Thats what we expect to do. Probably 5 days of fishing at the most but like I said, its a crap shoot. Either way, I'll be with great friends, Fishy, Jamie, Hoodad, jim Hall, an others. We made a run to the rocks on a 6 day on the Vag last year, Cofe's trip an Fishy an I an the rest killed them for just a day n halfs fishing total!!! So go enjoy, whatever you catch or were ever you go, your going to do what you love.

Ray

I think that I will never do a 10-day in the winter again. 5 days of soaking bait in Cow Town for nothing but the cow did not suit my patience well. If I have the resources in the future I will go 15-20 to experience not only the shot at a cow, but the wahoo and everything else.
Until then I will stick to the 5-7 day trips.

10-12 day at the right time, t-day to mid jan, should give you a shot at the cows. Plus you get plenty of little guys to go with the cows ususally. 15 days? I might need to find a clone to take my place at home. Given that I need a day of travel each way, that's 17 days out of pocket. Those of you living close to the docks don't know how good you have it (well, maybe you do )

All I can say is that no matter how many days you spend, fishing for all types of fish or just going to fish for cow's, its time away from reality. Its time to enjoy, relax, kibbish with friends, an test your self against a speices in its own enviorment. Win or lose. We all know that it takes time to get to the fishing grounds. Just get your mind set on travel time and the posibility of getting skunked. Thats what its all about in my books an others that really enjoy the sport. So many possibilites exist when going out on a L. R. trip. The catching can be poor but the trip fantastic. Kick back, enjoy everything because it could be your last trip.

Having fished up and down the Baja coast line by panga for vacation and adventure moved on to 3-5 days adventure I got the long range bug. Lupe, 5-7 day trips, The Rock and the Islands 7 day trips, Cow Town 10 day trips. All have been great vacation and adventures to #314 Yellow Fin Tuna, on differnt boats different time of the year, from early summer to mid winter, pick your time of year and prep that type of trip from cows to mixed bag. This years trip will on the Showgun 13 day after Thankgiving looking to go to the Hurrcaine Banks for big fish.

I just finished my longest trip yet, a 7 day. As for whether I am ready for a "cow", I don't think so. My trip at the Lupe was frustrating as heck and I think I caught more fish than the average bear, 2. In two days, I had 4 bites and 2 fish. I compare this long range fishing to big game hunting. I think guys go through changes as they mature to the sport.

When I first went deer hunting, I went out with the biggest gun I had just hoping for a deer, buck or doe. As I got better at it, I looked for something more challenging and stepped up to blackpowder. As I got better at that, I went to Archery, the ultimate. I am sort of in the middle ground right now, I am ready for some larger fish, but I am not ready for the physical and emotional stresses of catching fewer but bigger fish. That is my simple $.02 worth.

Cow fishing is definitely different. It does take time. You can go for days without a bite (except on sharks, marlin, or other non-targeted fish). I've only done it once, (first of this year) but it was really something to get hooked into a cow. Especially if you are using a short top shot. You feel all the force of his head shake every time. Its like he's throwing you around and you're getting punched in the ribs (with the rod). When you win you know you've been in a fight. It's really fun and I will get out there again as soon as I can find the time and money.

On the other side I love catching fish, more than fishing. I think that's just human nature. So if I had a chance to catch one cow in 7 days, vs. be on a 2 day with several wide open bites on 20 - 30# tuna, that's a hard choice.

On a longer trip if we aren't going for cows, I would like to be going for wahoo or some good size tuna and yellowtail. I'm not real picky. I like it all.
