3-5 day trips

Target fish: All tuna, wahoo, and dorado. Just how long of a trip is needed to achieve this? Recomendations on good boats. Yup, this will be my first long range trip.

Summer 3-5 day trip will give you a good shot at tuna and dorado. If you want wahoo your going to have to go longer, such as 7-10 days. Check out pointloma sportfishing, fishermans landing and h and m landing for information on the boats. Also, use the search bar from here for more information on the boats.

Tuna + wahoo + dorado = 10 days in Sept or early Oct.
Wahoo are the problem.
Royal Star or the Excel, just my 2 cents.

2.5day ,try the el capitan ,out of point loma.
alan is an outstanding capt.
i did 4 trips on his boat last year.
also try the lo ann& the grande.
if you can spring it, hit a 5 day

Hey Norm, if you wan't a good shot at wahoo in addition to tuna and dorado the first 10-day fall trips are a good choice. Any of the scheduled boats will work just fine but I'm partial to the RR111.

If you grew up fishing overnight albacore, you may be ready to jump to a longer trip. However, I can tell you that if you aren't this experienced in "the tuna shuffle", I suggest that you try a 3 day on the Vagabond with Capt. Mike Lackey. He is the bluefin King and will put you on something to pull on. You will learn so much that you can step on a longer boat and fit right in. Plus, he runs a great trip with good food and great service. If you are overly experienced and really want a mixed bag of Yellow Fin Tuna, wahoo, and dodo (heck, I don't even keep these-either give them to friends or donate to galley for dinner), you really need to hit the right fall 10 day trip. I suggest trying the RRIII as Andy Cates has a great nose for early 'hoos. You probably know that there is a big difference between having a chance at those species and actually landing them all on one trip. My best trip (a spring 8 day), I landed bluefin (95, 75), yellowfin (many up to 50#), yellowtail (47#, my personal best), albacore, wahoo (1, donated to galley), calico bass (released), whitefish (nuisance) and sheephead. Would that be good enough without the dorado? My trip two years ago (5 day), I got a large dorado, many Yellowtail, and 3 yellowfin tuna up to 65#, and one albacore but we didn't see a wahoo. Last year on a 7 day, we didn't see an albacore, our boat caught 1 Yellow Fin Tuna (about 45#), but we got into wide open Yellowtail action at Cedros. My limit of 15 fish weighed 419#. I also caught a dorado and the biggest sheephead you can imagine, along with a ton of calicos (all released). In addition, a deckhand landed two halibut at night that were FULL SIZE! It is still fishing, and you can't predict what will happen. Hope this helps.

We've been on a few five day trips, all in August, and we've yet to see a 'hoo boated. We have seen just about everything else, though, including Blue Fin Tuna.

We haven't fished any other but the Red Rooster III on five day trips. It works well for us. So far we see no need to change. But I am sure the others are good, too. I hear the Excel is the bomb.

Load up on 40lb stuff and lots of 2/0, 3/0, & 4/0 hooks. Iron is good for 'tail, but most fishing, especially for tuna, is a 'dines game.

is an awesome, i am 15 and have taken a trip from 2-4 days on the vagabond every year since i was 8 this year taking a five day in middle of june. hope you have a good trip where ever you decide to go

To get all of those fish you need to take a 10 day, then you will get those and a lot bigger Yellow Fin Tuna as well. I took a 11 day last year on the Royal Star and had a blast, I go out on the Vagabond all the time and Mike will always put you on the fish. I am going this weekend on the Vag for 5 days, a trip in July for 4 days and then a 10day after Thanksgiving. I am starting to feel like one of the crew. The Vagabond with Mike is a great place to start. I have a trip over the 4th of July on the Vagabond, and a 6 day on the Royal Star coming up in August. I perfer the Royal Star for longer trips, but all of the boats are good.
