| 5 Day Terminal Tackle
I am going on my first long range trip this year in July on the Excel and I have been going over the list of terminal tackle needed on their website for a 5 day trip.
I am looking to know what the real deal is here. There is an awful lot of tackle listed there and I can't believe I will actually need all of this. Does anyone have a personal list of terminal tackle they use for a 5 day?
Thanks

Erik, which trip are you on? I am on the Stires Sokioga trip around 07/24. Last year, you would have been good with a single pack of Mustad 94150 hooks in 4/0. We patty hopped all trip save for part of the last day when we bottom fished. I added some owner ringed hooks this year. Also, I used Floro carbon leader. PM me if you have questions.

I am on the Excel Seeker trip July 5th. If I had all of the tackle listed, I would definitely bring it all. This is more of a question from a greenie who has never done this kind of fishing before.
As far as ROD/REEL combos, I am bringing:
Seeker 270 with Avet MXL 20lb Maxima
Calstar 665C with Avet JX 30lb Big Game
I know I want to build one more for this trip, probably a 50lb rig so I am covered if we get into anything big.
Keep in mind I am only bringing these rigs because it's all I have. I have built these two above for this trip. Most of my gear is freshwater stuff.
Thanks

Use the boats trollers...
I wouldn't bring surface iron if you've never fished it. The boat will tie your bottom rigs so just bring some lead. Like 4 yo yo (heavy) iron; you can buy more on the boat if you need to.
Hooks: 2, 1, 1/0, 2/0, 4/0 anything else you can buy on the boat. I would invest in some 20#, 30#, and 40# flourocarbon as well.
You will potentially end up at the Lupe so a 50# rig is okay, but you might want to rent/borrow an 80# rig for the dropper loop.
Questions?

Thanks for all the feedback, keep um coming. My buddy also found a link with a pretty good write up of a typical 5 day... The 5 Day Long Range Experience | Coastside Fishing Club

I've been to the Lupe to fish everything but tuna... Bass stuff, Dorado, Yellowtail, etc...
Sat at the Lupe for a 5 day on one spot and fished larger tuna (60-120#) the whole time.
I've heard od (never done it myself) where the boat will be off shore the whole time.
Good luck with your trip and let us know how it goes with pictures please.

Erik, on my one and only trip last year, the only gear used by anyone, other than trolling rigs, were 30-40# gear. Cedros was stocked with boats and the captain said no one was catching anything so we stayed offshore hitting kelp patties. We had a blast and caught a ton of Yellowtail and Dorado and very few and small Yellow Fin Tuna. I went with a 60# rig which I didn't use and I wore out my jx2speed with 40# line. This year I added an MXL with 30#, a saltist 40 with 40# and a bottom fishing rig that I will probably put 60# line on. I would call and ask Justin Fleck to call you and talk about what you have and what he thinks you will need. I did this and it was reassuring. I don't believe the Excel is running trips yet so he should be reachable by phone. Betty or Kathie can get him to call you.

sdangler has the right info. Never know what the destination may be on a 5-day. Bring your basics, hooks, flouro, a few yo-yo jigs and get the rest off the boat. I, as many others have also stated, have gear I bought 20+ years ago for these trips that I may never use. The boats list is formatted so you cover all the bases and is a good guide. For your first trip though, go light on the terminal gear and get what you need on the boat. You can always buy it later. A phone call to the landing before depature can be invaluable also. Crew or skippers will usually give you the run down if they are available. JMHO

You can always make friends and bum hooks off them. I gave hooks to a dad and his older teenage boys last year who where unprepared newbies. I had to show them how to rig up and taught them a few knots. They caught fish and had a great time... you will too. Both boys caught their first albies. I shook their hands and welcomed them to the top of the food chain.

Questions? | This sounds like the most logical advice. I will buy the hooks and weight I know I need in modest quantities as well as flouro leader and then buy whatever else I need on the boat.
Thanks for all the great input and PM's. Can't wait to get into some real fishing! I will def. post pics and a summary of the trip.
