I would expect to target albies for a few days, and spend a day or two at Cedros or Benitos fishing yellowtail. I think you're light on the rod/reel factor. You'll probably fish mostly 30 and 40. If you wanted to stop by my place on the way south I could loan you an outfit or two. I'm in Visalia, so a little out of your way.

For irons bring a few 6X's in scrambled egg, and a few 6X jr's in scrambles egg. In several trips to Benitos and Cedros I don't think I've used 3 pieces of bait. I agree with the comment about forgeting the surface iron if you've never done it.

KISS....

one 30, 40, 50, and one 80 or 60 dropper loop

Just pick a rod that will duo as a jig rod and a live baid rod. You will either go to Lupe or Cedros. We only stayed a day at Cedros and those damn seals took about 1/3 of Yellowtail that were hooked.

30# is good enough for Albies, the 40# for Yellowtail and 50# just in case. If you are going halibuts and bottom fishing, you'll need the dropper loop, if not don't bother. Get a couple of 6, 10, and 16 ounce torpedoes. I never used anything other than a 1/0 and 2/0 Gorilla in terms of hooks. Go with fluorocarbon if you can afford.

If you are going to fish the iron, just ask the stores there what is hot.. usually they mention a specific color that has been hot with all the trips. I usually bring one white/blue, one scrambled egg and buy one there. Just make sure you tie your knots or your bound to lose them to the Yellowtail around the heavy structure.

BAIT IS FOR BITCHES!

If you do get a chance... Get one of the deckhands to show you how to use the long rod and swim a surface iron. Trust me there is not a much better experience than seeing the fish come up behind it and take it.

This is our buddy from Oregon getting the long rod workout.

Once you get a fish on the Long Rod with a surface iron you will be hooked.

You know what, he just might run out and buy one! This guy is hardcore when he gets "into" something. I am going on the same trip and am gonna be loading up on tackle and gear.

I talked to the gal down there at the Excel and it looks like they have permits for the next year but the last time they went out to the Lupe, they lost over 100 fish to the taxman.
