albacore

Is anyone planning on getting the albacore to bite a fly this year? In the past I have found the alberts to be cooperative in biting on the feathers and plastic line.

Yes sir, I'm your huckleberry! I never leave home without my F-rods. Normally a 9 and a 10 wt, one with full sink and the other a 325 SH. But I am going to get a 425g SH for my 10 wt. All I need is the weather to lay down a bit so that I can get my boat out to the grounds, last year we had a blast with rat Yellowtail and dodos. Not to mention some real nice bones, man they can pull. Yeah albie Yellow Fin Tuna 20#+ Yellowtail, if I would have acted sooner I would have had a shot at BET. We had them boiling behind the boat for almost an hour+, but it was taking about 20-30 min. if you got a BET to get it in. My New Years res is to be fly ready this year and not so gotta put fish on the boat! If you are planning anything for fly fisher please let me know, if you want to chuck some flies let me know. I have a 24' Robalo and a great little skiff for bays and short runs to the kelp.

thanks

Thanks for the invite. The FF can be alittle tough on the big boat most of the year, although I have had some great experiances and opportunitys. The skiff option is where its at for the local fly-guys. Its key to have that rod at the ready, and to have some leaders pre-made so that you can loop to loop them, on a short notice. Yellows on the paddy bite the fly good. I had the record for 10kg. on the boat, paperwork filled out, fish wieghed, witnesses signed and I lost the the camera that contained the offical wieght and measurements . Just one of the sad storys of my WR (non)accomplishments.

That sucks, I have caught and released at least 4 WR calicos over the last 2 years. Just didn't know better, as for the big boat it's not that tough but the skiff is a fly machine. I am down to give it a go

12wt.

I'm leaveing tomorrow on a five day and am taking the 12wt. If I get a chance the the albacore I don't want to mess around with a 10wt.gunz The darn things are biting, but it is forcasted for the wind to not lay down, but come back up to 15 to 20 knots by the weekend.

I'll be out there, too! Tuna Kahuna and I have been buddy boating lately, we both throw fly gear when we can.

Maybe you can post when you're going out and we can buddy boat? I've been trying to collect SWFF photos of tuna and Yellowtail for Fly Fishing in Salt Waters, would be good to get some boat-to-boat shots.

Abel

I'm am very fortunate to be in close contact with Steve Abel, so I use his reels. For my 12wt. an Abel 4.5, in fact there is a picture of it on MOW #71. It handles 500 yards of 50lb. power pro spectra, along with a clear intermediate tarpon line, no problem. That one reel has caught alot of tuna, upwards of 60lbs. As for the rod, a G Loomis cross current, nine foot, one piece, which I am pleased with so far. The titanium guides are a nice touch.

Some of my buds and I are heading out this weekend. Going to push past the 425 on Ron's (Reel Trouble) advice. I didn't even know BD had a fly fishing forum. We've been having some luck with the Cuda's and such at TJ's. Of course there was the WSB. The photo of that fish is suppose to be in FFSW next month. Ron and I have been wanting to put together a buddy boating excursion just for FF and give some of the local guys a shot at the inshore action. Any of you guys interested in participating? Also we were told that the IGFA is interested in setting up a tournament in SoCal or SD. Has anyone heard anything on this?

Clouserhead.
