Any of you guys ever fish for mullet? i didn't even know it was possible until the day before yesterday when i caught one. about a 3 1/2lber. Not a bad fish on a 5X tippet. I always thought they were vegetarian but he swallowed one of my small ghostshrimp flies. Jumped out of the water a few times and took me into my backing. If any of you guys have ever tried this i was wondering what you have had good luck with. I found out after a couple searches its pretty popular in other parts of the world but iv'e never heard of people doing it around here. Just one more type of fish in the water to be caught. |

I believe they are , (mostly), vegetarian. It is very rare to mouth hook one. Most are caught by people snagging them with big trebles. There are tons of them in the channels. Sounds like a good fight. Congrats. |

I'm all ears.

Boston Whaler Outrage, "黒潮” Location: Osaka , Japan Job:62% Stockholder, Hazama International Corporation Bio: Hazard | A couple of years ago I was fishing for seabass (similar to a snook) in Japan. The were not biting, so my prostaff asked if I wanted to catch some mullet.
On what?
On small black ripbaits. Specifically a Lucky Craft Humpback minnow. He said any small (5 to 7 cm) minnow will work.
I call BS,
and he preceded to catch 4 four to seven pound mullet on the 4lb. spinning gear.
I got an idea. I had seven weight FR with a sinking tip line in my truck. I also had a collection of black wooly buggers that I used for Amago (a Japanese trout)
It was great fun. A slow twitch and strip was the ticket. All the fish were mouth hooked, and some jumped! A size six seemed to be the ticket.
Anywhoo--mebbee the small black flies will work in Cali too.
Nice report--and don't listen to the hayters--they are always picking on us gay BD members.

.................................................. ......................I've caught them on rip baits too [lip hooked] as well as small mega baits. I'm not sure if they want to eat the bait or attack an intruder, but they bit none the less. A very game fish on light tackle, but not the best table fare. |

It's funny, when I'm throwing my 400 gr. line I cast much better backhanded than I do casting normally, even if there is no wind. |

Bio: Finding dream fish for people from 6" to 6,000 feet... | BBR, if you are hitting your self in the chest, there are a couple of things happing, either the wind is blowing over your casting shoulder...then backing is the answer and easy to do as well as learn. Your front cast and your back cast are/ should be the same, no difference in the 2. When back casting, turn your body in the opposite direction you wish to cast, and let your line go on the back cast. Do not try to change anything or speed up your last cast, just let it go as you would on your front cast. The other problem you may be having is you are moving you rod from right to left, assuming that you are a right handed caster. your rod should never move side to side when you cast, just back to front, 10 to 2... Hope this helps... BTW, could you post a picture of that fly, I would love to see it, thanks... |
