The finish will come off if you slightly heat it. Use the guide foot as a reference and cut the wraps and finish (warmed) with a sharp blade (razor or Xacto). I cut down on top of the foot starting at the ring side. Once some of the wraps are cut just wiggle the guide and it will eventually come off. Then sparingly use heat to pull and unwind the rest of the wraps and finish. The handle and reel seat (if any) will have to be cut off. Make sure and take your time because you don't want to cut either yourself or the blank. I use a heat gun vs. open flame but only warm. Too much heat will also ruin a blank. Once everything is off the blank I lightly use Scotchbrite to buff the blank then use Permagloss to refinish. Randy.

Randy, thanks for posting this. (as have others) I've seen you do the same post several times whenever someone asks. Maybe Don or someone could post it as a sticky??? What do you guys think?

I do the exact same process as Randy, Although some times a reel seal will come off with a little heat, But be careful not to heat the blank too much. If Don (Orca) did the original, Your fucked, He uses marine tex and that shit has to be cut off.
I find that real old rods were built with low quality epoxies, Plus being old and crystalized, A little heat and the seet will slide right off
