F.Y.I.: Scott Throop

On September 14, 2007 I forwarded a check to Scott Throop for payment regarding construction of a custom fishing rod. At that time Scott informed my brother and I that the rod would take approximately 3-4 weeks to build. In reliance upon the estimated build time, out of respect for Scott (based upon what we learned of his industry reputation from on-line resources, magazines, etc.) and to demonstrate our good faith, we paid Scott up front and in full.

Between September 14, 2007 and the holidays we spoke with Scott a couple of times and he reassured us of of his commitment to building the rod and that he would make every effort to complete the rod for delivery before Christmas. As of this date (January 24, 2008), I have not received my rod.

Since the last time we spoke with Scott, he has not even given us the courtesy of an e-mail or telephone call. We understand that there have been widlfires in California and other weather related issues which have impacted Scott's ability to build rods; however, it has been OVER 4 MONTHS since Scott's receipt of payment in full. Needless to say at this time we feel like we've been robbed . . .

Since Scott has acted so unprofessionally (ignoring e-mails and voicemail messages), I feel like I have no option but to post on forums and warn other consumers NOT to send him any money. Moreover, if my rod ever gets delivered I feel like it is going to be of inferior quality either because Scott is going to get pissed that I am posting this information on forums or because he will rush to complete construction.

Has anyone else encountered similar problems with Scott Throop? Does anyone know how to get in touch with him? I would sincerely appreciate your assistance. Thank you.

Oh shit.... Not this again... You're not the first person to have this problem. Sucks that this crap is still happening.
Do yourself a favor, if you want a reliable guy who does awesome work, contact Apocalypse13 on this board the next time you want a custom stick. His work is second to none, delivers ontime, is extremely reliable, and will go the extra mile to make sure the customer is happy with his work. Between my dad, brother, and myself, we have about 15 rods that he's wrapped.

Also, I see you're an attorney. Just write a nice letter on your letterhead and see if that gets the wheels turning.

Re: F.Y.I.: Scott Throop

Thank you to all the BloodyDeckers out there for your prompt assistance. I got home from work tonight and Scott left a message on my answering machine requesting that I call him. After our telephone conference I am pleased to report that Scott has given me his word that I will have my rod in a week and a half. Scott was very apologetic and explained that he encountered some personal and business issues which temporarily adversely impacted his rod building business. I understand that people have to "do what they've gotta do" to get by and I have been advised that my rod will be completed and shipped forthwith.

In closing, it appears that rod building is a tough industry. I am willing to give Scott the benefit of the doubt to "make good" on our deal in order to preserve his reputation. I will keep you informed as to what transpires. Once again, thank you all for your assistance.

P.S. As of now, don't be too hard on Scott. He is a gifted and talented guy. At this time I remain willing to give him an opportunity to redeem himself. To all others out there looking for Scott - he has been so informed and is aware other people need to get in touch with him. Scott is taking this situation seriously and is in the process of contacting everyone. Scott is highly aware of what he needs to do and is committed to making everyone happy.
