RAIL ROD ?

Have a nice acid wrapped 6460, I was wondering has anyone put 3M cold shrinks over the hypalon for rail protection and then removed after a trip. Have alot of the cold shinks lying around and don't mine wasting some. Any thoughts??

Re: RAIL ROD ?

Why remove it after the trip? The cold shrink should work great!. See Branman's article here:

Re: RAIL ROD ?

I really like the look of the rod asis, but would also like to use as a rail rod if needed. Just don't want to screw-up the hypalon. Don't know if leaving the cold shink on for 2 weeks would have any effect on the hypalon grip???

Re: RAIL ROD ?

The only affect the cold shrink should have on the hypalon is that it will compress it a little bit. It is extremely durable and can be used a long time before changing. Eventually when you remove and replace it you will see that the only change to the hyp is the compression which is no prob. The cold shrink is great, id put it on and leave in on if the rod will ever see rail duty.

Re: RAIL ROD ?

I used it on butts before and had great results. I am curious as to what Scott Throop is using though because it is supposed to be incredible grip material.

Re: RAIL ROD ?

Doc, This rod was built by Scott, its in his rod gallery (top roll third or fourth from the left). I think I'll try the cold shink on a less expensive rod, leave it on for two weeks then remove and see if any damage..

Would also be interesting to know any feedback on the EPDM grips that Seeker went to.

Re: RAIL ROD ?

John- another thing about the cold shrink is that actually compresses the hypalon down in such a way that is appears to almost flush (the cold shrink) into the hypalon. It will appear alomost as though a section was lathed out of the hyp specifically for the cold shrink.

The stuff looks cool IMO, screams big fish.

Re: RAIL ROD ?

i would put the shrink on just for preservation of the rod especially if its part of your custom rods collection

Hypalon is rail protection, in many years when the hypalon begans to crack and dry out(which wont happen if you take care of it) then apply the cold shrink, if theres nothing wrong with your hypalon dont fix it.

Re: RAIL ROD ?

Hey guys. Forgive the stupid question but at what pound test do you consider a rail rod? Does it just depend on the fisherman or is there a typical pound class you feel you need to use the rail. Or, is it species i.e. Yellow Fin Tuna and Blue Fin Tuna? Thanks guys. Never been on a long range trip if you can tell...
