Re: fly/casting?

I believe many of the four piece fly blanks are already ferruled. I dont think you have to do that nowadays. Just spine it up and build the handle, and wrap.

Re: fly/casting?

Find the spine on each section and build as you would any other casting rod. What weight rod are you planning on using? I've built a couple of 9 foot 3 weights as ultra lights. Great for 1 or 2#.

Re: fly/casting?

about 15-20 lb test for Alaskan Salmon. Most of the rods built for this are too long to carry on a plan, hence the multi-piece.

Re: fly/casting?

David,

We get customers that do it all the time for that very reason. There are 3&4 piece spin & casting blanks available from various Mfgrs, but most are too stiff for Salmon. Try a 9 or 10wt. Plenty of backbone, but still pretty soft up front.

If you're checking it in a tube, you can use a 2pc, but you probably need a 4pc. for carry on. Tough to find bags/socks for 3-4 piece with anything other than fly guides, but Tim @ Swifty Mfg/Bluewater Tackle in Azusa is working on some now that will take spinning guides because of this very application.

Just know going in that you'll void the blank's warranty wrapping it as anything but a fly rod. Not that it's a problem, but they only provide warranties for the blanks intended use. You might want to stay away from the higher modulus stuff for that reason. They're more expensive & more fragile. Try an IM6/RX6 blank.
