Name: Kristina Age: 44 Vessel: none that works Location: slo-cal Job:sales/student Bio: biology major, homebrewer (Beer is Good..), & toe-headed soul mama | Help/Advice on a new rod Well, here's my problem, i have a calstar GS765XL (20-50) with my MX 2psd on it right now. It's nicely wrapped with heavy duty guides and anodized real seat and gimble. It was great on a 5day i took it on catching up to a 51 lb yellowfin. I just got a AVET LX and thought about using it with that calstar instead. Then i would need to have a new rod made for the MX. I plan on getting an SX and was thinking of getting a seeker 500 for it. So far, i fish mainly 1/2 days, 3/4 days, and overnights. I really love fishing for Yellowtails, and tuna. mainly anything that bites. -So, i'm thinking, should i have a new rod made for the MX or the LX? - Is the seeker 500 a good choice for the SX? -And, What would you go with if you had your choice? Thanks for your comments and advice. |

For the half day and local stuff Calstar 270 and 270H...But they need to be deckhand style with tuna cord wraps and Newells to be retro.
The Seeker Black steel series is aso a great option.

Seeker lists the 500 as a 25# blank. I have never seen one, so I can't say whether that's accurate. To me, an Avet SX is a 15-20# reel (I would fish 20# on it) so I would think the 500 is a bit too heavy, which is backed up by the specs on seekers website.
In a 8' rod, good options would be:
Composites
Seeker CLB806 - 15# line
Seeker CLB806H - 20# line
Seeker CSW808 - 15-20# line
Calstar 800XL - 15# line
Calstar 800XLH - 20# line
Rainshadow 80XL - 15# line
Glass
Seeker/Calstar 270-8' or 270H-8'
In a 7' rod, good options would be:
Composites
Seeker CLB706 - 15# line
Seeker CLBF708 - 20# line
Seeker CSW708 - 15# line
Seeker CSW709 - 20# line
Calstar 700XL - 15# line
Calstar 700XLH - 20# line
Rainshadow 70XL - 15# line
Glass
Seeker/Calstar 270
Which one of those is the best choice depends on the line strength you think you will be using most often, whether you will be casting light irons/swimbaits or mostly fishing bait, and whether you mostly fish on private or party boats. Also, there are plenty of other manufacturers who make good rods, but those are solid recommendations.

Hi Kristina-
I've been fortunate enough to have fished a few different Seekers, Calstars, Loomis and Graphite-USA rods. I've been happiest with my GUSA rods. They're light, have fast action, and are surprisingly powerful. Noah's has a great selection of blanks. I put my SX on a SW70MH, my JX 6/3 on a URS65, and my Saltiga 30 on a 711H. I now leave my Loomis rods at home for most of my inshore and offshore trips. GUSA rods are a little more pricey, but when I'm casting and fighting fish all day, I'm not thinking of how much my tackle costs. I'm thinking about fatigue, action to feel the bite, and power to keep the fish from turning its head on me. Don't count out GUSA. My $0.02.
-Kristian

well, i got a purple SX for x-mas, and went out a couple days ago and tugged on a few GUSA's at NOAH's before going out on a 1/2 day new years eve afternnon. Decided on the 80Mag. Now i just gotta decide to go with my normal color scheme, or go with something a bit different. These are pics of my color scheme til now.

Your stoked on the new SX for Christmas. Whose gone twiddle up your rod for ya?? Id go with a sweet Super Seeker with Fuji seat and Xflocked over cork grips, maybe fuji guides. Not trying to talk you out of the 80mag, but the SS are pretty sweet. The color of the blank (rootbeer) is so nice with blacks and purples. Looks like you need two rods, one for the LX and one for the SX.

I figured i'd get the rod for the SX done first since i'll use it more often. i thought about having the guy who did my other rods but then i changed my mind and thought about going with mike from temecula bait n tackle (which is no more) do it. i have heard alot of good things about the work Noah's does and considered that too. i wanna figure out what guides, grips and real seats i want first. i have learned enough up to this point to know exactly what i do not like, so that is an excellent start. i have been going through the rod building forum for ideas on colors and paterns. i figure i want to get this one exactly how i want it so i will be ultimiately happy when i finally get it.

#1 thing is that the rod is the way you want it, feel free to PM if you have any questions about components. I will warn you though, I will be away on a trip from Jan 20 until about Feb 4. Nice newer Avatar, nice slug.

If you want a light rod i would stick with the GUSA Super seeker are good rods but a little too heavy i recently wrapped a SS704 and SS806H. for the SX i would go the GUSA
