taking off flex coat?

hi, I am new to rod building and just messed up a rod on a guide. do any of you know the best way to remove flex coat on a rod?

Also I wrapped yellow d nylon and medium brown d nylon on a tan calstar rod, and when I went to flex coat it the yellow changes to gold and the brown changed to burgandy. Should I use NCP? I tried color preserver and that doesn't help at all.

Re: taking off flex coat?

Second question first. Yes you should use NCP Thread. Nylon thread changes color with or without color preserver, for that matter NCP will change also just not to the same degree.

As for removing flex coat from a rod I am assuming you want to remove the flex coat from the guide where the colors didn't come out right. Since the flex coat is fresh you should be able to cut along the guidefoot with a single blade razor and peel the thread and coating off.
Once the guide and thread are off a little acatone or denatured alcohol should soften the finish enough to be scapeded off with the back of a plastic knife.
If the finish is too hard to be removed with the plastic picnic knife some gentle sanding with 600 grit wet or dry sandpaper will be required.

Good luck.

A little heat works wonders when stripping off old flex coat.
