flex coat over plastic tape?

i use colored plastic tape to mark my custom rods i build and on my factory rods..
my custom rods are black on black so i need to mark them so they're easier to find.

i was wondering if i could flex coat over plastic tape??
you flexcoat over fish stickers, i don't see why you couldn't do it over tape?

You can Nelz. Might chip or peel up after time, but whaterver. I would only do it near the butt and not on a eye wrap. tape off both side of the tape to aviod over spill and remove it when the gel is tacky or gel-like. You know the program

Re: flex coat over plastic tape?

I meant the foot area of the eye, where it's been glassed over the thread already. Any bare part of the rod would be fine. An area that has flex over top of it would probably be okay too. It's just that sometimes if there is any residue on the surface when you apply the flex it will pull up off the existing flex after awhile....looks ghetto is all.
Haven't surfed in a week or so, it did look fun yesterday... maybe this afternoon. This work stuff is way over rated

Re: flex coat over plastic tape?

Best to clean any area to be flexcoated with denatured alcohol first to make sure its clean, this even applys to previously coated areas such as guides or butt wraps.

Re: flex coat over plastic tape?

Nelz, Sage,

Are you saying to apply a section of colored tape to the rod, applying masking tape immediately above and below the colored tape, then flexcoating just on top of the colored tape?

I was wanting to marking my rods with some 3/4 - 1" wide metallic tape, (something like the pin striping tape used for cars) but want to make it semi-permanant. On the rod good enough to where someone else won't be able to remove it easliy, but still removeable in case I want to sell the rod.

Sound like this will work?

Yup, first clean the area off with denatured alcohol as rodbldr pointed out.

Re: flex coat over plastic tape?

yeah, i learned the hard way and now i clean all surfaces with denatured alcohol before i flexcoat... oil from fingerprints suck if you don't use alcohol..... makes for a nice smooth take..

Re: flex coat over plastic tape?

Nelz, Here's the metallic tape I was talking about, they have a bunch in 1" and some in 2";

Not as nice as a custom wrap, but definately better than colored electrical tape. The rolls are about $5 and plenty to do several rods. The mini diamond plate looks pretty cool to me!
