Dean,
I'd try a little heat first (not too much). If that fails, spiral cut it off with a Dremel tool. My .02. Randy.

Buy heat do you mean a flame or hot water?

Hot water. Flame might work but also might damage the rod itself.

When we have to do these we cut off the parts - at some point, there will be enough removed to make it possible to pull them off or wiggle them off. Be careful to slice at such an angle that you are not going for the blank in the middle.

Yeah Dean, what Russ stated. Not open flame but either hot water or heat gun (sparingly). Sounds like you got it figured out already. Randy.

So if i put the butt end of a old 70's lamiglass fiberglass rod into a tub full of hot water do you think I would do any damage to the rod?

Trying to take off grips and reel seat and hopefully save the reel seat.

The short answer is no.
Water boils at a lower temp. than what the blank was baked at when it was made. Damage occures when one heats the blank up to or beyond the baking temp and the resin that bonds the fibers lets go. If memory serves graphite is baked at around 250*- 275* (i think)
