Thats why.
Pretty much... I was 18, an E-1 in the Navy and working two days a week on the the Daily Double. Even with my deckhand discount at Squidco a 100J blank and a set of pefections was spendy to me. One of the relief captains wrapped it for me. Then I had a 270-8 wrapped and years later I finally wrapped a rod or two of my own. No style to them, pure function at the most affordable price!

When casting, they load up better. When you epoxy a reel seat on the blank, the action shuts off at the top of the seat. But with corktape the rod flexes all the way to the butt cap. That's my #1 reason....

Keeping it cheap for the deckhands seems reasonable. But, why do non-deckhands want them?
