help with a tip-top loose (not broken)

Hello Folks,

I've just bought a rod for muskie fishing (I will use it for big SBB and
SeaBass 5-8 lb max) and part of the tip-top arrived almost completely loose
(dont worry I already make a deal with the ebay vendor)



I really like to rod in general, and also liked the tip (holographic color),
as you can see it is not broken just loose, but I really dont know
if it still can be fixed and most important if it will not fail in a fish fight.

it can be welded, glued with gorilla glue or another kind of superglue?

in the case that I need to buy a new one, what size should I need
to order?

That tip is toast, get another one.
Measure the diameter of blank tip & thats' the size tube the new top
will need to have. Ring looks like a #8

Yeah,that tip is pretty much broken.Acidrod.com has a wide selection of tip tops including the holographic tips.Buy a stick of tip glue too.

Who is the rod/blank manufacturer, and model? With that info you can easily determine tip size, and order another from acidrod.com

ok.. I bought a new tip and a stick of tip glue


the tip fits perfect and the whole job was a piece of cake, i took the old tip out, melt the glue with a lighter and put a lot in the rod tip then put the new tip in, cleaned all the excess of glue and waited one day to let it dry, but now I found out that the new tip is not firm at all it's loose you can turn it around without any effort, you cannot take it out from the rod but it turns around the rod tip easily.

what I did wrong? the stick of glue was berkley brand and is special for that purpose.

should I heat the new tip again after put it in the rod to have the glue really hot and melted?

heat the tube of the tip carefully & simply remove.

what happened depends on the technique you used in the 1st attempt.
- most likely it was associated with insufficient glue being placed in the tube of the tip
- but there are other possible causes
so having got that tip back off again:-
inspect the rod tip and the tube of the tip to assess which component lost adhesion with the glue.
the typical cause is that the glue is not hot enough when you put the tip on the first time & it was simply scraped off the join, instead of being smeared in the join.

Start again;- ( nothing you have done in the first attempt will interfere with the second attempt.............if anything it will help the second attempt. )
- no need to remove any of the glue from the first attempt, you will just be adding to it in the second attempt.

with hot melt glue this is a multi-step process to be sure you get it done right.
- prepare the end of the glue stick by heating & as soon as you can touch it , pull it out like toffee to taper the end to fit inside the tube.( you only need to melt the very end surface of the glue stick to do this ).
- cut a piece to fit inside the tube loosely ( Note: loosely not tight ) & put it in the tube ( cold).
- heat the tip tube on its own in your hand ( holding it by the ring)
-heat the glue & apply more inside the end of the tube.
- put the tip down on a saucer & reheat the glue stick
- wipe the glue into the rod tip.
- put the glue stick down and pick up the tip again & reheat it until the glue is nice and soft.
- quickly reheat the glue on the tip
- quickly put the tip on the rod ( twisting it back & forth as you go )
alignment is not critical at this point..........its simply putting the tip on the rod while the glue is nice & soft ( almost runny soft).
- align the tip
-remove excess glue just before it goes fully hard ( basically at the point that the glue does not stick to your finger when you touch it & you don't get burnt.)

- if alignment is not perfect , simply gently reheat the tip tube until you can twist it into alignment...........don't force it..........heat till it moves easily.

process control:
If you cannot hold the tip by the ring in your fingers , you're getting everything too hot.
If the glue smokes , you are getting it too hot too quick in the flame.
